5.0 out of 5 stars Must buy British tv comedy. Excellent. 15 Feb 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Well worth waiting nearly a year after the initial advertised release date - a lot of work has gone into this DVD set of the complete 1972 series, 16 episodes.
Network Video have done an excellent job at restoration and the images are very clean and bright. Half of the episodes have extra material added. In addition there are many outtakes.
See Peter Sellars throw Sykes over the settee! See the man who operates the bird in the clock...
One episode, not seen since 1972, exists only in black and white, but has been lovingly restored.
Classic domestic comedy by a master classic comedian. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, Eric! Brilliant, brilliant..... 12 July 2005
Format:DVD
There is something wonderfully familiar about "Sykes" as a comedy series - some sort of fondness between each of the actors and the writer that could not have been faked. All the quirks and irregularities of Sykes and Hattie Jacques when they're acting... It was as if they were all a large group of friends who were just making each other laugh.
At first, I thought this might have just been my own impression, or a fluke... but after viewing the clips "In the Studio" (an interesting set of outakes/behind the scene footage), I saw that this was indeed the case. And all the better for it.
A brilliantly funny series, with cameos from lots of Eric Sykes' closest friends... Peter Sellers (hilarious) and Joan Simms (excellent) to name just a few. The production team has obviously taken it's time in restoring the series, and this process is shown on the DVD... each disc has a different feature as well as the episodes.
A perfect DVD package to accompany a perfect British TV comedy series. I highly recommend you to buy immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars ERIC SYKES COMEDY GREAT 28 May 2007
Format:DVD
Wonderfully warm intelligent and clever at comedy Sykes is a delight to watch. This DVD contains 3 discs and a total of 16 episodes from 1972.The writing is as always sharp and amusing. The joke is always firmly on Eric. The character parts he writes for himself range from sanctimonious to dimwitted, the daydreamer with big ideas and the know-all who is ready for a fall with his sister Hattie by his side.

Here is a writer at the top of his game. Its just a shame that mainstream TV doesn't recognise too often the fine body of work Eric Sykes has contributed over the years. My favourites on here are Uncle,Football,Cat, Cafe and the lunacy of Job.The fact that Peter Sellers appears in Stranger hints at the respect and regard fellow celebrities have for Eric.Jimmy Edwards Bill Maynard Joan Simms and Roy Kinnear also feature in various episodes.

The Series has been cleaned up and restored and looks very impressive it does include 1 black and white episode Journey and has features including out-takes a real gem of a comedy.More please BBC.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sykes 23 Nov 2010
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Having read "If I don't write it nobody else will" (Autobiography)If I Don't Write It Nobody Else Will I had to purchase this DVD set. I wasn't disappointed. Made in the era of "Light Entertainment" this is "gentle" comedy at its best.In his book Sykes uses the phrase "chuckle" a lot and this is what it is all the way through - in fact a funny and entertaining series.
Excellent supporting cast in Hattie Jacques, Richard Wattis and Deryck Guyler. This series from 1972 demonstrates how far television has fallen in recent years - this is a series you'd make plans to stay in and watch rather than escape the drivel that is offered nowadays. Picture quality and sound are excellent (You'd think it was recorded last week) Out-takes are also a bonus included in the set. Good to see Eric on television last week in "Poirot - Hallowe'en Party"(2010)playing the role of an elderly lawyer (Mr. Fullerton) - may he long continue !

5.0 out of 5 stars Sykes deserves a complete release 21 July 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Well.... it has now been over 5 years since this fantastic DVD was released, and nothing further! There were 6 more colour series and a Christmas Special broadcast between 1973-1979 on BBC1.

If you would like to see more Sykes please email the BBC and/or Network and tell them. Sadly, it won't happen unless we let them know there is a market for more.

It may be over thirty years since initial broadcasts but Sykes has lost none of its charm, and every episode remains extremely funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reissue needed! 8 Feb 2013
Format:DVD
Surely the silly prices being asked for this dvd and Eric's recent death should convince even the living dead who run Network that this, and all the Sykes series, should be reissued. In a box!
