5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting and heart-wrenching, 10 Mar 2008
By Suroor Alikhan "suroora" (Geneva, Switzerland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a brilliant film, based on a true story, about Sybil, a woman with multiple personalities. Sybil was so traumatised as a child that, to protect herself, she broke up into 16 personalities. The film focuses on just a few of these: Peggy, the nine-year-old who remembers the torture and is angry; Vanessa, who plays music beautifully; Vicky, the "friend" who is socially at ease; Mary, who is a memory of Sybil's grandmother--the only person who loved her; and Marsha, who is suicidal. They all reflect facets that Sybil has hidden away from herself.

The film is about how her psychiatrist, Dr. Wilbur (played by Joanne Woodward), helps Sybil to face her past and finally bring all the personalities together. It was Sally Field's first dramatic role (she was better known as The Flying Nun), and she is completely riveting as Sybil and all her selves. Joanne Woodward is also excellent. Apparently when they were casting for Sybil, the real Sybil called the real Dr. Wilbur and said that the only person who would be able to play Peggy was Sally Field!

Just a word of warning: it is very intense and not for the faint-hearted. But definitely worth the trouble--it is one of the most moving films I've seen. I have to admit I watched it in two parts, rather than straight through, but I would like to see it through, maybe in a few months.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an impact!, 15 Aug 2008
By Harri (Ramsgate, UK) - See all my reviews
I first watched this film about 25 years ago as part of my Social Work training. It still has as much impact today and is definately a film that once watched, you will never forget. It deals with the still relative taboo of abuse by the mother and the impact that this has on the psychological well being of Sybil which culminates in the creation of multi-personalities which enable her to deal with her life. This is the most amazing film you will ever watch but do be prepared for the trauma and emotions that it will stir within you. I would not recommend this film to any person below the age of 16 and if you decide to use clips of it within a teaching setting, do prepare students well before hand and be prepared to debrief after! (Students will need tissues but so do I!)
