Howard's iconic character Conan of Cimmeria through the years, but none have done so more brilliantly than legendary Spanish painter Manuel Perez Clemente Sanjulian. With the impact of a battleaxe, "Sword's Edge" collects an action-filled brace of paintings that brings Howard's classic stories to vivid life for a new generation of enthusiasts. Best known in the United States for his cover paintings for the comic magazines Creepy, Eerie, and Vampirella, Sanjulian has been rightly called 'an artist's artist' for his masterful compositions and vibrant use of colour. Honoured by the Society of Illustrators, he has created his numerous book jackets for a diverse range of publishers.
About the Author
Manual Perez Clemente (better known as Sanjulian): Born in Barcelona, Sanjulian studied at the Sant Jordi Academy of Fine Arts. Initially working for the comic section, his full colour works are now being seen worldwide. In the 1980s Sanjulian worked for Warren Publishing on titles like Creepy, Eerie, and Famous Monsters, but he is mainly associated with the Vampirella title, for which he illustrated many classic covers. Sanjulian has worked for various US publishers, including Dell, Ace, DAW, Bantam, Fawcett and Berkeley, Grove Press, Pocket, and Harlequin. He has created paintings for such diverse spheres as Reader's Digest and horror maestro Clive Barker. Sanjulian has had several shows at the Society of Illustrators in New York and his work has appeared in many fine art galleries in Europe. His paintings have often been compared to Velazquez in terms of palette and technical ability.

Sword's Edge is a collection of fantasy art paintings from the Spanish painter Manuel Perez Clemente Sanjulian, as inspired by Robert E Howard, the guy who created Conan.
There are not just beautiful paintings but also sketches. The paintwork is marvelous, and you can see and almost touch the scars on Conan. Sanjulian also has his inspiration from Hal Foster and Frank Frazetta so there's some similarity in style. But make no mistake, Sanjulian is an excellent painter himself, able to create action-filled scenes and composition.
The hardcover book only has 48 pages which is on the light side but it's large format so the art displayed are big. There are also essays for the writer and artist.
Nice art book for fantasy art lovers.

Great Sanjulian collection

Underwood Books have done it again. They continually put out high quality art books on some of my favorite artists. This one is no exception. You get wonderful, full page reproductions of some of Manuel Sanjulian's best work. Students of art will appreciate being able to see the various brush strokes and use of color that makes Sanjulian's work so special. There are several examples of the penciled studies side by side with their painted counterparts. Not to mention the Robert E Howard connection. I am a huge fan of REH, so this is a match made in artist's heaven! The portrait of REH that Sanjulian has created is included as well. This is a welcome addition to any collector's bookshelf who loves great art or the works of Robert E Howard.

Got to see some different work from artist Sanjulian...nice book....book has nicely reproduced pics of conan type work painted by this artist...full color.....i only wish it were thicker!! I wanted to see more....a good find if you like fantasy writer R.E.Howards work..would recommend.
