2.0 out of 5 stars Another Dissapointment, 9 Oct 2009
By A. Bridger (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As with the first book of the Knights of Myth Drannor trilogy this book is incredibly dissapointing and could have been so much better. What makes this even worse is that these books are written by Ed Greenwood - the creator of the entire Forgetten Realms universe - and as such i expected much better from him. These books have all the appearance of Ed Greenwood just churning out another book for the publishers instead of offering a decent novel for the fans. Anyway on to the book itself.

This book appears to have been written without much of a plot - at least half of the book is the knights themselves just rampaging around the castle cellars trying to get somewhere and just running into battle after battle. This was very dissapointing as there was also very little character development to the main characters during this story - also the people they kept on fighting were the good guys in the story as well - theoretically if they had just surrendered straight away they could have acheived what they wanted immediately.

This is the second book of the series and Ed Greenwood has only properly developed two characters by the end of the book - Florin and Pennae - whilst the rest still remain poorly developed steriotypical fantasy characters - the big strong one, the magic user and the two comedy priests. Other Forgetten Realms writers such as R A Salvatore manage to develop five or six main characters in their books with apparent ease whereas Ed Greenwood in this series is struggling to. I hope in the final book the rest of the knights get more than passing mention and actually undergo some real development. Ed Greenwood actaully gives bitpart characters such as nobles who feature in minor roles of only a few pages more development than some of the knights.

One final point is that much of what goes on in this book is unbelievable. The Knights are a group of teenagers who have very little training and yet again and again they defeat groups of trained assasins, scores of Purple Knights and war wizards with apparent ease and sustaining little injury. Also even when they do get injured they just take a healing potion and they are healed back to normal. Are we really meant to believe that a group of six people could take out at least forty well trained and well armoured guardsmen who would have had years of training - please Ed Greenwood give the readers a little bit of credit.

Overall i would have to say that this was a better book than the first in the series - although that is not saying much - but it is still not enough to make reading the trilogy completely worthwhile as of yet. I have high hopes for the third book in the series as i know Ed Greenwood is a fantastic author and belive he can return to those high standards again. I think what he really needs to do is before writing the book come up with a comprehensive plot and then stick to it and not get sidetracked as he goes along. This should leave him with an understandable book that would be much better than his current offerings.
