Product Description

Swords for a Dead Lady is perhaps best thought of as a fantasy adventure. There is the discovery of the naked body of a woman hastily buried in a marsh, the quest to discover her identity and hunt down her killer leads our protagonists into ambush, civil strife and even light opera.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Original Fantasy Fiction 14 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Swords for a Dead Lady follows Benor Dorfinngil through an intricate plot of murder and intrigue in a highly developed fantasy world with a rich caste of characters.

This is a book has well developed characters and a good plot, but what makes it a real joy to read is the depth of background. This is not only original, with none of the cliches or tired formulae that so often bring the fantasy genre down, but superbly detailed. The reader can walk with Benor and the other characters through a world both curious and distinctly human, with the geography, history and demography all ready set out instead of created merely for the convenience of the plot. The author clearly has a great deal of experience with the worlds of fantasy as well, and of the practicalities of life in a low tech world, allowing him to avoid common pitfalls and present the reader with a highly entertaining and polished work.

4.0 out of 5 stars An engaging story telling style 30 May 2012
By Ignite TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am a keen reader of the fantasy genre and looked forward to reading this book. The story is engaging and there's lots of action, some humour and a little pathos. The characters all worked well for me, especially Benor, Cartographer (and much else!) The story deals with a land which has its own races of people, its own herds of animals and I found it interesting to imagine this other world which is in many ways an equivalent of our medieval world. There's plenty of intrigue here and the story has potential for a sequel.

Jim Webster has an engaging story telling style and a good knowledge of this genre. His writing has a gentle humour which comes naturally from the characters and their dialogue. It's not played for belly-laughs but is very effective. There were some real gems, which I very much enjoyed. 'He spat on the floor and missed' really tickled me! I look forward to more of the same.

3.0 out of 5 stars I really like what I've read. 21 Aug 2012
By Chrissy
Format:Kindle Edition
Yes. This is interesting. I sat down and started to read this, and yes I enjoyed it immensely. It's quite engrossing. However, I balked at the price. (Three stars for that) I've read a few books of a very high standard that were under a pound. And not being the richest lady on the planet, I'd have to argue that the price is a bit steep. Hopefully, if it get's lowered I'll read the whole thing!Fingers crossed.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read. 16 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Benor Dorfinngil, sometime cartographer and more often than not rake-about town is finding things a bit dicey in town. More than one jelous husband and their men-at-arms are looking for him so its looking like a good time to leave the town of toelear for a while until things settle down. Fortunately he runs into Rothred Axelbowkin, an urlan knight who has been sent to find him for a mission. Seizing the opportunity Benor quickly leaves town with the young knight to investigate the death of a young pregnant woman found buried in marshland. As they investigate the death they soon begin to uncover a plot of intrigue, murder and corruption..

If I were to describe the style of this book I would say it was 'vancian' that is to say much in the style of the great author Jack vance, author of dying earth and lyonesse. (if you havent read any jack vance i'd suggest giving him a try!) Its clear Mr Webster is a fan, hes made some excellent contributions to the dying earth role playing system The Excellent Prismatic Spray 2: An Adventure Supplement from the "Dying Earth": IIThe Scaum Valley Gazetteer: Based on Jack Vance's "The Dying Earth" and styalisticly swords for a dead lady feels right at home next to this branch of fantasy fiction. The plot is simple but well told and involving and the characters are believable and the whole book definately fitted the term 'page-turner' for me!

Overall i'm happy to reccomend this book to anyone interested in reading it, it's not necesary to be a fan of the fantasy genre to get into the book, but I'm certain any fans of jack vance or George r.r.
