The first in a Forgotten Realms series, this book starts with the wounding of a foe in a duel at Myth Drannor by Geran Hulmaster. Two years later, Geran and his friend and partner, the halfling Hamil, return across the Moonsea to Geran's hometown of Hulburg after the murder of one of Geran's old friends. He determines to revisit his family and ties with home, eight years after his last visit. Things at home seem to have changed. But Geran and Hamil are about to find out how much things have changed. For the balance of power looks set to shift, with the Vaasan lord Terov offering the Orc chieftain Mhurren of the Bloody Skulls tribe unprecedented power and weaponry; for a price. And why are the barrows of the dead being disturbed by somebody or something?
This is a great story - full of undead, sorcerers, orcs and other creatures, double crossing traitors, great friends and companions, and the overarching story of the battle against treachery and betrayal from more than one direction. In the course of the story Geran finds more of a path for his life journey, but at the end of the book it is clear that there is more than one thread of unfinished business still for us to discover as the trilogy continues.
I love these Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Ravenloft (Strahd is the most brilliant character ever!) and other similar type novels; and this book is no exception. It bodes well for the remaining two volumes in the trilogy.
