Honour be not dead..., 18 Sep 2001

This review is from: Swordhunt: 3 (Star Trek: The Original) (Mass Market Paperback)
As the previous reviewer noted, reading these books without reading the previous 2 would be a very difficult read. Or perhaps simply undesirable. Regardless, the characters that Diane Duane brought to life many years ago continue to develop and grow. And nowhere in the Star Trek universe has an author written the word "Honor" and made it mean so much, both to the reader and to those in the books. Get the first 2 books, "My Enemy, My Ally", and "The Romulan Way". Read them, and get to know their characters, then decide whether its worth reading more. But if you liked the first two of her books dealing with this star faring race who call themselves the Rihannsu, but who we know as Romulans, then by all means, get these two. And pray that the next book comes soon...

The Romulans plot against the Fedaration, 14 Dec 2000

This review is from: Swordhunt: 3 (Star Trek: The Original) (Mass Market Paperback)
The book relies heavily on knowing what happen previously in the 2 prior books. For those people that read them a long time ago it means digging them out to find out what the plot is going on about. Based on how the Romalans part in the Star Trek Universe was going before it was re-surrected in "The Next Genarartion", it's very slow to take off and is obviously just a platform for things to come. It does leave you eager for things to come however.

Good book - but could have been better..., 24 Feb 2004
This review is from: Swordhunt: 3 (Star Trek: The Original) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Rhinsu series is perhaps one of the strongest explorations of the Romulan culture and of any culture in the Star Trek series. Sword Hunt is the latest additon to this series although it was published over a decade later from the last one. The book previous to this one was an solid indepth look at Romulan history, what drove the Romulans, key parts of its history and social changes - fantastic stuff. Swordhunt had a lot to live up to, it has faltered a bit. The mixing of the Romulan and Federation crew aint go the same effect that it had in the first book - my reaction is now oh look Uhura is singing some nice songs and the Romulans and Federation are exchanging humours anecdotes. The Romulan weapon that creates ion storms or something doesnt feel that threatning - its as if Kirk knows that the weapon wont affect any planets outside those mentioned by the book - so he casually discusses it like he's studying a nebula or something. The Romulans elsewhere on Romulas are doing their usual scheming which is quite enjoyable to read. Its a good book yes, but its not got the same strength is predecessors have. Books 3 and 4 of the Rhinnsu series could have been merged instead of relying on oversided margins and font to balloon it into two books. The fourth book creates the real cliffhanger...
