Getting better. 3 April 2012

Fun:
I waited for this game and was patient (I'm also a cheapskate and waited till it was £10). Steam says I have logged 453 hours on sword of the stars 1. I loved the original and couldnt wait for the sequel. Then the reviews hit last October, not wishing to believe them I looked at the official forums and my heart sank - the game was a buggy incomplete mess. Riddled with problems, GUI faults and game breaking issues.

Still. This wasnt much different from SOTS1 on release so I had hope. Almost 6 months on and the game is a different state - still not 100% and still not "as good" as the original. However, it is getting there and is certainly playable. Should you buy it? If you are a fan of the original then probably now is a better time to play it or retry it. If you are new to SOTS then buy the original set first (by the time you have had enough of that then the sequel will be far more mature).

Before reading the reviews look at the date of them - the game HAS changed a lot since release and for £10 I think it is a bargain.

Fun:
Like many others I was deeply disappointed when this game was released. It was unfinished, in fact it seemed barely started, and even now many features are missing from the final game. I put it away and counted my money as wasted, turning back to the original Sword of the Stars for my fix of turn based strategy.

Several months later I noticed on steam that there had been an update. In fact, there had been several updates over just the past week and, as I looked back, I saw that a truly remarkable number of changes had been made. So I took a chance and reinstalled the game and began to play. I was very pleasantly surprised by the enhancements that had been made. I'm not yet convinced that it is yet a marked improvement on the brilliant original Sword of the Stars but it is beginning to look like a worthy successor. There are, as I mentioned earlier, a number of features still waiting to be implemented that can undermine your enjoyment of the game but these gaps are still being steadily filled in. At the current price and with the improvements still being made showing a real commitment from the studio to finish the projects I would happily recommend this game to fans of strategy games in general and even to long term fans of the franchise originally put off by the tales of doom fans swiftly shared at launch.

Fun:
Sword of the Stars II (SoTS2) should be a must-buy for any fan of PC strategy games. In time, it may well become just that. As of 2nd December 2011, however, the forums are still filled with long lists of bugs and crashes - lists that are far longer than one should ever see for a game that was released for sale to the general public a month ago.

Kerberos, the game's developer, and Paradox, the publisher, have a very well-established record for sticking with a product, continually improving and expanding it. I believe that they will do that with SoTS2 and that, with a little luck, SoTS2 will one day stand with the very best of its genre. But not yet. Important elements of the game are disabled, some parts are bugged to the point of having no impact on the game and others actually cause it to crash. This, when linked with what is currently the most user-unfriendly UI in the history of 21st century PC gaming, would force me to recommend patience with this one. Check the forums before buying!
