Reviews

It is 16th century Florence and the city is undergoing a renaissance. It is a city of poets and painters, wealth and marvels; but there s a canker in the bosom of paradise the city is ruled by the dangerous and power-hungry Duke de Medici, a duplicitous despot who will stop at nothing to expand his power base. He is opposed by a secret army of Republicans, of whom one such patriot is Marco del Monte: painter, swordsman, champion of the needy and Renaissance Man to the core, del Monte uses his wits, cunning and sword in the struggle to help overthrow the tyrant de Medici. Another of ITC s remarkably successful historical adventure series (alongside such shows as The Adventures of Robin Hood, William Tell and The Buccaneers), Sword of Freedom stars Edmund Purdom as swashbuckling artist Marco del Monte. With a guest cast featuring, among others, Peter Wyngarde, Geoffrey Bayldon, John Le Mesurier, Patrick Troughton, Michael Bryant and Andrew Keir, this is the first time that the complete series has been released in any format and is presented in production order.

Set in 16th century Florence, with the city undergoing a renaissance, this swashbuckling 1958 TV series follows the adventures of artist and Republican Marco Del Monte, (played by Edmund Purdom) who starred in a number of Italian "sword and sandal" epic movies.
Here, master swordsman Del Monte battles the political machinations of the dangerous and ruthless Duke De Medici, (Martin Benson) who rules Florence with a hunger for more power.

Del Monte prefers diplomacy and persuasion, while only reaching for his sword as a last resort. As with many swashbucklers theres a dash of romance here and there, Del Monte is sometimes assisted by Angelica, (Adrienne Corri) the artist's muse.
This series is a relative of other 1950's ITC productions, like Richard Greene's "The Adventures Of Robin Hood", and "The Count Of Monte Cristo" starring George Dolenz.
Although I personally enjoy the aforementioned two series more, "Sword Of Freedom" is still an entertaining series, with a nice nostalgic feel, with many familiar guest stars, including Geoffrey Bayldon, Peter Wyngarde, Andrew Keir, Patrick Troughton, Roger Delgado and Derren Nesbitt.

The special features are:
*Image Gallery.
*Merchandise Gallery.
*PDF Materials.

This complete series of 39, twenty-five minute black and white episodes, features good picture and sound quality, no subtitles. A brief synopsis of each episode is featured on the inside of the single-size DVD case, which holds all 5 discs.
Another welcome release from Network.

Well, here it is after all these years. We've had Robin Hood, William Tell, The Buccaneers, Sir Lancelot, Francis Drake and, more recently, The Count Of Monte Cristo. Now, at long last, we have 'Sword Of Freedom' starring Edmond Purdom, an actor who fitted well into costume adventures on television and in movies. He had already starred in the movies 'The Egyptian' ( 1954 ), 'The Prodigal' ( 1955 ) and 'The King's Thief' ( 1955 ) and went on to appear in many others, but for some reason he never really reached big star status.
In 'Sword Of Freedom' he plays Marco del Monte, an artist and swordsman living in 16th-century Florence, who supports the Republican cause against the tyrannical Duke de Medici ( played by Martin Benson ). The series ran for 39 episodes between 1957 and 1958 and had many guest stars including Peter Wyngarde, John Le Mesurier, Patrick Troughton and Andrew Keir. The sound and picture quality is very good.

I had not seen any of the episodes prior to buying the DVD, but I am glad I did. Full of good story lines and just so many guest stars who went on to become household names. A very good set of DVDs for anyone who remembers classic TV drama series.

Bought as a trip down memory lane for my husband. This is exactly as described, in sealed packaging, arrived within two working days. The quality of sound and vision is good (no subtitles as per description, but diction is clear anyway). Typical TV half hour dramas, cheesy but swashbuckling, and if you like the Renaissance all the references to famous artists, political murk and even a proposed duel featuring a "machine gun" invented by Leonardo da Vinci! Light, but very enjoyable.
