4.0 out of 5 stars A forgotten film, but a joy to relive!, 18 Feb 2009
By Roger (Colchester) - See all my reviews
If you've seen this film at all, you were possibly young, like me at the time. Released as "Lancelot and Guinevere" in the UK in 1963, it featured on TV a few times some years later then disappeared from the scene. Even now it has not been released in the UK so you will have to get it from the US, and thus your DVD player must be capable of handling Region 1 NTSC (in practice many players seem to handle it OK).

The film quality shows its age; the prints must have deteriorated somewhat over the years and this is evident at times. Curiously, the sound has suffered, quite badly in parts, though it is mainly Ron Goodwin's (lovely) romantic score which is worst affected. This must cost it one star; still, none of this stops you from following the story. Common to many DVDs, the `extras' are hardly worth bothering about; a few stills and a dummy's quiz.

For all that, it is still a joy to relive a film which thrilled me when I first saw it. It has a story which is fairly faithful to the legend, the main departures being an excuse for action scenes. It is typically 1960s adventure, no message or deep study of human nature, but all involved act earnestly enough; it rarely gets bogged down with dialogue and has some marvellously bloodthirsty fight scenes! Of course it is far from a classic, and many have pointed out some anachronisms, the age of the actors and the occasional clichéd line. But it remains a favourite of mine.

If you like this sort of film it's well worth a go!
