5.0 out of 5 stars BY THE SWORD DIVIDED, 4 Mar 2005
This review is from: By The Sword Divided - Series 1 [DVD] [1983] (DVD)
Since I first watched this series in the 80s. I have eagerly awaited an opportunity to see it again. The possibility of buying a copy has prompted me to ask frequently at outlets only to be disappointed. I ordered this DVD before release and have watched it several times since receiving it.
The series is a pure joy. My memories of the sets, acting, costumes etc.,. had not deceived me. The quality of all is second to none. This is a DVD well worth investing in.

4.0 out of 5 stars a welcome return, 28 Mar 2005
This review is from: By The Sword Divided - Series 1 [DVD] [1983] (DVD)
like the other reviewers i had passionately loved this drama as a youngster and anxiously awaited its return on dvd.
i was not dissapointed!
Yes its slightly 1980's TV but it still stands as an accurate and moving account of the civil war....its greatest strength is its focus on a family and village, with all its attendant colourful characters...this personal scale makes you so involved in the terrible tragedy of it all that you feel like you belong to the Lacey clan. it doesnt paint easy sterotypes or cardboard evil characters but tries to convey the motives of all- hard in such an epic topic.
i loved watching it again! thank goodness for amazons new rental option!!!!!!thanks for making it available thus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 1980s Series, 16 Sep 2004
This review is from: By The Sword Divided - Series 1 [DVD] [1983] (DVD)
This was a series that I remember enjoying way back in the early eighties and have been waiting 20 years for it to be repeated/released on video. I'm very glad to say that it was well worth the wait, it is easily as good as I remember it.

Let's get the negatives out of the way: the 'extras' are a waste of time and packaging amateurish. Almost everything else oozes class, particularly the performances Julian Glover and Timothy Bentinck. There are a few less than convincing moments (as there are in most historical dramas) where the central characters try to describe the major events going on around them, but they are thankfully rare. On the whole the series manages to (largely, though not totally) avoid heavy handed stereo-typing of the characters and their beliefs and convictions, and we get to know real characters.
Two other major pluses are the costumes and sets which are faultless and as the series progresses you can really imagine yourself whisked back to the 1640s (although the 80's TV 'feel' to the picture quality does at times momentarily spoil the illusion).
On the whole though, from the first unforgetable bars of the theme tune, this is a very welcome (and long overdue) return of an excellent TV series, and a pleasing re-union with the Lacey's and the Fletcher's. If you were a fan of the series, a Civil War buff, or are at all interested in historical drama, this really is an essential purchase
