Book Description

Newly updated and corrected 2nd edition (February 2014)

You swung a staff until you were ready to swing a sword. Then you went on all kinds of adventures -- fighting monsters, casting spells, and saving damsels in distress. At least that was how it was supposed to work, but I didn't believe a word of it.

BOOK ONE OF THE EPIC FANTASY SERIES RETURN OF THE DRAGONS

Locked in his room in the castle, young Anders yearns for adventure. Until the day he opens a magic portal and a girl bursts into his locked room with a chemical warlock hot on her trail.

And adventure finds him -- an adventure full of danger, full of blood, fire, demons and evil. To face it, he'll need the sword given him by his blademaster, need the ancient words his grandfather gave him on his deathbed. Need the song that runs in his own blood, in his veins.

A sword will be reforged, magic words discovered, battles fought, friends made and lost, secrets revealed. And blood will be spilled. But will blade, word and blood be enough?

Finished with Sword Bearer? Check out book two of Return of the Dragons: WIND RIDER, now available.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sword Bearer 1 Sept. 2012
    By NYM
    Format:Kindle Edition
Sword Bearer is the story of a young prince who finds out he's much more than he previously thought. Sitting alone, locked in his room to study, Anders in thrust into the middle of a battle between forces he'd never even known existed. I liked some characters more than others, but felt they all had their own voice. The plot moved fairly rapidly so I never felt it got bogged down with details or side-stories. It is aimed at the younger crowd, but I still enjoyed the read. It was a little short, but I am looking into purchasing the next book to see where Mr Jacobs takes us.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Young Adult Fantasy 19 Jun. 2015
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Combining an interesting world with an accessible hero, Jacobs creates a fantasy quest that flows quickly without sacrificing a sense of epic possibility beneath the surface.

Anders is the son of a provincial diplomat. Descendant of warrior magicians, he has spent his childhood learning some skill with a stick, a little magic, vast amounts of table manners, and entirely too much of the contents of tedious (and potentially fabricated) histories. On his sixteenth birthday he finally graduates to learning with a sword; but instead of the transition into adulthood he expects this to mark, his parents and tutor treat him as if little has changed. Locked in his classroom while his parents spend the evening out, his decision to pursue magic not homework tears his world apart.

Filled with worries about pimples, anger at being treated like a child, and petty rebellion, the opening of this book makes it clear this book is young adult rather than fantasy with a young protagonist; and the rest of the novel continues in a similar style.

However, this fits the plot: Anders is pulled from sheltered naïvety into a war between good and evil, so should swing between feelings of great worth and fixation on what to those with life experience appear the most minor of things.

The only area where the style might trouble some readers is in development of Anders’ role as champion for good. Where the ambivalence and obsessions of teenage life are given full rein, his development as a magician, swordsman, and trusted ally of mysterious civilisations is both smoother and faster. As such readers who expect their character arcs to be gritty, might feel a lack of realism.

The world-building is a similar mix of epic possibility and the selfishness of youth.

Extremely absorbing! Action and adventure together in a perfect combination. I especially like the way you describe your characters. It makes you feel like you personally know them. Can't wait for the next book in the series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 23 Feb. 2013
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a great book and an easy read. The characters are engaging and likeable although the plot moves very quickly on so can be a little difficult to follow at times. Perhaps a bit short also but will definitely be getting the next one.

In the beginning I did not think I would like this book because I thought it would be for youngsters. However, as the story enfolded I thoroughly enjoyed it and I believe there is a sequel so I will check if it is available.

    4.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise 22 Feb. 2015
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An enjoyable read because it so quickly gets into action and engages you with characters with whom you can relate...especially Anders as the "awkward" teenager (I remember those pubescent years of pimples, nerdiness and the unknown zone of girls). I fully enjoyed the mix of medieval and contemporary. It was a nice surprise to read the inclusion of the Germanic which somehow made the story more real and even plausible.

The style was fresh, easy and readable. The book left me wanting to know more about Anders family and ancestral background that will ultimately lead to a foreseeable confrontation with his past in the present over his future and others. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent magical adventure with promise of more 7 Jan. 2015
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a voyage of discovery for a young man just coming into his magical powers and we discover his universe along with him in a series of tests trials and adventures. Although the book is self contained I can't wait to see what happens in the next one that continues his story and reveals more of his mixed and dangerous magical heritage. Recommended to anyone who likes Tolkien and similar - this is on a grand scale that is somehow deeply personal at the same time and you'll feel sympathy and involvement with the characters in the story.
