I rarely feel compelled to write reviews, however, having listened to this album 4 or 5 times now, I just could not bear to see it stand with a paltry average of 3 stars from the two previous reviewers.
I hear and appreciate the comparisons made with other bands but how many bands / artists in the world today can be described as completely original? Apart from those that are also completely unlistenable of course!! The Pickups, for me, do have their own distinctive vocal and guitar styles and on 'Swoon' they exploit these strengths to the full. Anyone who appreciates a good melody and unusual harmonies will love the way they contrast these with the overdriven guitars and delightful orchestral arrangements.
I enjoyed the previous album 'carnavas' for the original song structures and killer melodies, (if you haven't heard them before check out the stand out track 'lazy eye' and I am confident we will be welcoming you to their legion of admirers), but 'Swoon' could well eclipse it as the band seem more comfortable and settled with their songwriting style.
I actually, disagree with the first two reviewers and believe that the album gets stronger as it progresses. The first 4 tracks are the growers for me, whereas the rest of the album is instantly loveable. In a week's time after a few more listens I am confident that this album will break into my list of top 5 contenders for album of the year, so far.
Great stuff, highly recommended! Bring on the UK tour!
