And altogether, the modern country, with its cities - Zurich, Basel and Geneva - banks and leading industries, has preserved an old charm that makes it special among European countries. It is, in some ways, incorrect to speak of Switzerland: it would be more accurate to speak of a collection of very different languages, traditions and landscapes, united in a single container.
This is where the charm of the country lies - in this great variety of different images in a very small area. The book is packed with photographs and text by a very special observer, the Swiss journalist Moreno Bernasconi, allowina even those unfamiliar with the country to become acauainted with its historical and cultural aspects and admire its beauty.

This book was a present for my Dad for his birthday this year. He is Swiss and goes to Switzerland every year, even though he's now 85. The book is beautifully illustrated and has about two pages dedicated to each city/town. I don't have it with me now to remind myself but on receipt of the book I was very pleased and my Dad liked it too!

Having spotted this book in a shop in Luzern, it looked good. Much cheaper to buy it from Amazon in the UK, though. It gives a few pages on the complex history of the country and then describes what to see in each of the main towns and areas, particularly from a historical viewpoint. Even though I have visited Switzerland on numerous occasions, this book told me things I didn't know and I now have a list of more places to see next time. Well illustrated in colour but the pictures could have been printed a bit lighter.
