Book Description

We all want our laptop computers and other electronic gadgets to pack more features into less space. That requires reducing the size of power supplies, which is why power supply design is changing so fast. Now the best-selling guide to the field introduces hot innovations such as low input voltage supplies for portable electronics, power factor correction, and high-frequency ballasts. Fully updated throughout, it remains the all-in-one, ``how-to'' classic for design engineers everywhere. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Pressman covers a much greater range of topics than Keith Billings does in 'Switchmode Power Supply Handbook', and the info is more up to date regarding modern techniques and core materials. However, Pressman's coverage of magnetics design and other practical design issues is not nearly as thorough as that in Billings's book, and his use of imperial (and sometimes mixed) units is apt to be confusing to the metric-minded. (How to miss Mars by 130000 km etc). I would recommend that persons actually involved in SMPS design should own both these books.

As a practising electronics engineer, I was looking for a crash course in switching power supplies, as I had to design one that was more complex than I was comfortable with, for a particular project. After buying and reading several books on the subject, I concluded that this book is the most helpful, and easiest to follow. It is written in plain English, with helpful cross references between different chapters, and written in a way that enables you to start your own design by following the explanations. At the very least, you will gain a much better understanding of the diverse design issues involved, when you next see someone else's design. This is not the cheapest book on the subject, but well worth the money.

Pressman exemplifies the saying that a scientist will derive everything, but an engineer is one who knows how to quickly look it up in a table.
