Positive but brief. 4 July 2010
By Neil Goodacre VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Sahar Hashemi (co-creator of Coffee Republic) has won all sorts of awards for giving advice to entrepreneurs and Swithced On is her attempt to bring the same sort of thinking to the masses. The book takes you through several steps, each designed to help you get more invovled at work, and is generally quite positive and refreshing. It doesn't really tell you anything you don't already know, but it does make you think about how to apply what you already know in an effort to make your working life a bit more enjoyable and it does have a few nice ideas. Let's be honest, anything that makes the working day go faster has got to be a good thing!

Switched On is an interesting book but seems to be aimed at office staff more than anyone else. I might be wrong about that, but I can't see how the ideas in it could be put into practice by, say, a bricklayer or a taxi driver for example. If you're a bricklayer or a taxi driver and you've read this then please go ahead and comment!

I should point out that there really aren't many words per page in this title and you will very likely get through it in a single sitting. I'm not sure it's good value for money from that persepctive but then if you value quality over quantity, you might be able to forgive. When all's said I done, I'm not that this book would suit everyone but if you're an office type with a love of jargon then you'll definitely get something out of reading this.

Switched to mute 18 Feb 2011
By Mr. Robert Kelly VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
OK, I have to admit it. I have read a lot of these books, and this one seemed to be almost archetypical of the genre. Personally I don't know what it is, but 'Switched On' like many other examples seems to aimed at the almost mythical middle tier employee in a middle tier company.
Again the message here is that you should work at something you enjoy and sieze the initiative, take risks and make bold decisions. Authors seem to forget that many people work in organisations where initiative is not so much discouraged as actively stamped out. The other issue I have is almost complete absence of humour within books like this. The language itself seems to have been shifted into some sort of evangelically bland positive prose.
There is some good stuff here, but it's buried amongst a lot of other more familiar material. I would however recommend this as a sort of greatest hits of self help books, as having read this you won't feel the need to pick up another.

Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
A bit of a gem this book, in that it is a readable book, reaffirming most of what one already knows, but also revealing hidden possibilities and opportunities, whilst at the same time well grounded in the real world. There are a few well-known tidbits which may feel a slightly repetitive but they are presented in a non-patronising way and I suppose that these really can't be omitted from this genre of books.

The advice is mostly clear and logical, the style is easy and light, and there are a few real gems that serve to motivate and inspire in the background of the theme of optimism. It is also peppered with quotations from well-known and some not so well-known people, both contemporary and historic icons, which are not only insightful, but also fascinating!

The book fall exceeded my expectations. There are a quite a few lessons that I've picked up that I hope I will be able to utilise and implement! I think that the lesson may vary from reader to reader, but there is definitely something for everyone.
