This is a popular-level retelling of Leaf's thinking and practice in neuroscience and related psychology. Set in the context of her Christian faith and her understanding of what Scripture has to say about the mind, her material is fascinating. However, it was clearly simplified for a market with no neuroscientific background. Whilst I am very grateful for this on one level(!), it did also mean that I found the book disappointing. The scientific explanations proffered did not seem to hold together as well as one might hope and at times I was left very confused because there seems to be logical links missing in these explanations. The second part of the book contained practical exercises to 'switch on your brain'. These exercises, which seem to relate broadly to the concept of cognitive behavioural therapy, were interesting but again inadequately explained and thus not of great use. I wish that I could be more positive about this book as I really wanted to read something helpful about neuroscience and psychology and how it interacts with a Scriptural understanding of the mind and being - but this was not that book!

I received a free e-copy of this book from NetGalley in return for a fair review.

“If you realised how powerful your thoughts are, you would never think a negative thought.”

It’s a powerful statement, and in Switch on Your Brain, Dr Caroline Leaf shows how we are influenced by the power of thought. She is coming from a Christian perspective, and shows through this book how “science is finally catching up with the Bible”, and why “think positive” is more than a cliché: it’s the difference between a healthy mind and body, and an unhealthy mind and body.

Each chapter has a main scripture reference and a linked scientific concept. Some of the information was familiar, but a lot of it was new to me, especially the science. Science was never my strongest subject, but she did a good job of explaining the concepts to those of us who are less scientifically inclined (although she lost me at quantum physics!).

One section which surprised me was her comments on multitasking. Science actually says we should pay deep attention to one task at a time, and this is reinforced by Proverbs 4:20-23. I should know this. I get annoyed when I’m concentrating on something and I get interrupted, whether by a telephone call or a family member. The interruption is breaking my concentration and forcing me to multitask (and why is it these interruptions so often come when I’m trying to read my Bible?). She even refers to Twitter and Facebook, saying we have been reduced to 140 characters and are forever seeking the next informational high. Surely not? Excuse me while I Tweet that. (Joke. Like all the best jokes, there’s more than a grain of truth there.)

After explaining the Biblical and scientific principles , she talked through her 21-Day Brain Detox.

Absolutely superb, this book deals with the practical application of renewing your mind. All of the knowledge imparted here in conjunction with the Word will help those of you that have been struggling with "stinkin thinkin". Already I am reaping the benefits , God's will is for each of His creations to live in the fullness of life and freedom He intended. We also then become blessings to those around us.

I am still in the throes of absorbing this book so this review is only part of the way through.
It has made me consider many things and the science aspect has been challenging to get to grips with but makes complete sense in relation to my faith. Looking forward to finsihing it and doing the 21 day plan...

This is a good book with everything referenced, however, it is all about switching on your brain and I bought it in order to learn just how to do that - but - with a switched off brain this is quite a difficult read....... This takes high concentration to read, and is not easy to understand as it goes into good depth about the subject matter of the brain, which, if you already have some knowledge of is okay. Don't read it if you are tired.....
I absolutely love the way the scientific reasons for the way the brain works is also biblically referenced throughout. (Understand that a lot more than the medical terms) and I am sure that when I work out how to apply the steps Dr Leaf outlines to 'switch on your brain', it will do just that, but it is going to take me time to process this book. I would like more examples or case studies to explain how the steps should be applied.

I bought this book because I heard the writer on youtube and was quite impressed with what I heard. The book is replete with scientific jargon which is difficult to follow. The exercises in part 2 are not simple and easy to follow.
I just wanted a book to inspire me and give me practical steps to change. Not this one. I (bought it about 4 weeks ago) am determined to go through and gain some knowledge from it.

So far only 3 start I dare say.
