I bought my Ice Grip walking stick attachment to help with last winter's snow and ice.
It fits literally within a minute to walking sticks of varying diameters, securely held by two simple screws (a screwdriver is required to tighten it up securely).
The gripper is a circle of steel with sharp prongs, resembling a crown cap that fits snugly over the walking stick ferrule.
It operates on a very simple lever principle; pressing the lever arms together enables it to be flipped up or down. The two white plastic knobs that are pressed to enable this can just be seen in the photograph. Severely arthritic hands might find this problematical, the knobs are quite small and some light pressure is required.
I found that my grip worked best on icy, compacted snow. I had to dig in in sharply with each step on really compacted snow, but I was considerably safer than if I had not been using one.
It wasn't much use on sheet ice - the sharp prongs skidded off this and I was wary of damaging them. It does work well on mud as well, and rinsed clean quickly and easily under the outdoor tap.
I snagged my trousers once or twice on the prongs when the grip was flipped up and was worried I would catch passers by. It was quickly removed once there was a thaw and stored away - I've just brought it out for this winter and again, it fitted to a stick in seconds.
