Reviews

Take four girls, add some flirting, stir in a quantity of heady rebelliousness, a pinch of risk-taking, several spoonfuls of true friendship and Stella, Jude, Grace and Hannah are born. Four young twenty somethings based in London's Camden Town who just happen to be witches.

Lacey Turner (EastEnders, Bedlam), Nina Toussaint-White (Doctor Who, EastEnders), Phoebe Fox (Black Mirror, New Tricks) and Hannah Tointon (The Inbetweeners, Hollyoaks), make up the foursome who play the Witches of Camden in this vibrant, romantic and energetic drama.

Alongside this coven, there's a brooding dark force in the form of the Witches of Kensington--Alexa, India, Romola and Remy. These girls aren't to be messed with. They are sworn enemies od the Witches of Camden and the lengths they'll go to is pure evil.

When I watched the first episode of Switch, I thought I might have found a new TV addiction. We don't have many supernatural shows on British TV and I'm not sure there are any on ITV (unless you count children's TV), so this show had promise.

Four friends living in Camden: Stella, Jude, Hannah and Grace look like ordinary 20someting roommates living in the city, when in fact they are a coven of witches. Each witch has a particular element: Stella is Earth and is the mothering, voice of reason of the group. Jude is Fire and aspires to be a fashion designer, but lacks in patience and enjoys partying a little too much. Grace is Water, she's quiet and shy, but very loving and devoted to the craft. Hannah is Air and is flighty, constantly travelling and can be a bit irresponsible, but always means well. When these four are together, they can cast powerful spells for just about anything.

The four main actresses have great chemistry and this was by far the show's biggest strength. The comedy had big highs and big lows, unfortunately I think the lows won out on that one.

We also meet The Witches of Kensignton (SP?), a rival coven that hates the main characters. This starts off promising and the WOKs seem like a genuine threat... but as soon as they start to go down a really menacing and interesting path, they seem to revert back to the childish "evil magic" you'd expect from a kid's show.

The witches have great limits to their magic in order to stress the importance of their friendship, they have no magic when they are separated. I understand what they were trying to do with this, but having them gathered around the cauldron every time they wanted to do the slightest bit of magic just got incredibly repetitive.

This is actually a lovely little show, great cast and reasonably developed plotlines. Few underlying issues (that sadly cost is a second series) but taking it for what it is, frothy, light and entertaining, its worth buying the DVD.

Great chemistry is found between the four female leads, Earth sign Stella, (Lacey Turner) Water sign Grace, (Phoebe Fox) Fire sign Jude (Nina Toussaint-White) and Air sign Hannah (Hannah Tointon) as the Witches of Camden, who get themselves into scrapes every week: sometimes at their own hand and sometimes at the hands of rival coven The Witches of Kensington.

People have had mixed reviews to Switch, Series 1 but it does have a lot of enjoyable elements: well cast leads, entertaining enough scripts, decent SFX and rather touching moments in amongst some genuinely funny comedy, particularly given the likeablility of the four leading ladies.

The main issue that people seem to have is that it feels a tad directionless, like it doesnt know exactly what audience its trying to gain, and so has hit us with a bit of everything, resulting in a bit of a mess storywise. A bare bum and a few swear words, coupled with its unfortunate 10pm ITV2 would give you the indication they wanted the show to be more adult in tone, almost a UK Charmed, but the cartoon style plots and weak secondary characters watered it down so it appeared not to know what it wanted to be. Its a shame, because the comedy was quite edgy in parts ("She had a horse, and well...it sort of drowned" - love that line.)

A minor quibble is the lack of any extras: most shows get at least a featurette or interviews taken on set whilst filming for inclusion later and this would have proved valuable in the DVD's popularity. Hey ho.

There is a reason that you sit through a pilot, even the X-Files pilot was not great - but pilots should be enough to peak your interest. Switch was probably destined not to run forever, but it was fun for what it was. The script and budget probably didn't do any of the actors/actresses any favours, but they did well with what they had to work with. I was relieved when the 15 certification kicked in with some hilarious use of language and innuendo which made the show really quite watchable. Sadly the show only went for one season, but the plot direction seemed to wrapping up half-way into the season anyway. Having first seen Hannah Tointon in "The Inbetweeners" I bought this series on the strength, of what I believed to be, her latent mischievousness - I am glad that the script allowed for this perception to play out. Worth a watch for the humour and the main actresses were really quite good - still can't get "Lions In Cages" out of my head though!
Recommended as an unpretentious upbeat series that would have benefitted from better funding and a longer-term plan.

Fantastic British teen version of Charmed with, no demons or angels, just life loving girls spell-casting. Colorful stories with fun special effects too boot.
