About the Author
Johann David Wyss (1743-1818) was, like the narrator of his famous story, a Swiss pastor who had four sons. He is best remembered for Swiss Family Robinson which it is said was inspired by Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and which became an international classic bestseller.

Great for Students

This is a timeless classic and I am using it with my class of gifted fourth graders. What's fun about it is not so much the writing, but the exploration of the science connections! Bright kids love thinking about all the plants and animals the Robinsons's encounter on the Island and they are able to visualize all the engineering details of the raft and treehouse construction. My class had a blast reconstructing the Robinson's raft and seeing how much freight it could carry.
My son read this book as a second grader and still lists it as one of his favorites! This particular version has great study questions in the back!I also like the type size and font of this edition. The kids are a little intimidated by the size of the book, but the pages look very readable. Vocabulary can be challenging, but it's a good read-aloud book to challenge kids to at least reach above their reading level by listening...

i loved this book. it's not for everyone i admit. but the reason they had everything they could possibly need was because they were bringing fresh supplies to a new american colony! it was wonderful and thrilling and interesting. the way the author described things was perfect for any reader. loved it.

My Favorite Book As A Child

After reading the book as a child, how I longed to live in a tree house on a tropical island. I read the book numerous times, each time longing for the life the Robinson family enjoyed. They were creative in their solutions to everyday problems and after numerous trips to the sinking ship that had threatened to take their lives to bring back essential furniture and other goods to enable them to survive, they sunk the ship to prevent pirates from finding them. There is also romance in the book. The two Robinson son's vie for for affection of a beautiful female castaway on the island. One finally wins her hand in marriage and the second intellectual son returns to Europe to pursue his education. I highly recommend this most enjoyable book and also the Disney movie based on the book.
