I had this CD set delivered to me recently. These are recordings I am familiar with, pertaining to a time when Al Hirt was playing "uncompromised" dixieland, despite all the harsh criticisms he had from jazz critics in the distant past.

Audio Fidelity made sure that you would listen to Al and his band in the best way possible. The label was owned by someone who was devoted to stereophonic music and to several world-wide musical genres. Sidney Frey was in fact the person who sponsored the historic bossa nova concert at the Carnegie Hall in 1962.

Audio Fidelity had a presence in Brazil in the 1950's/1960's, and thus many of these recordings were issued in Lp format locally. After they left, they gave their representation to Som Indústria e Comércio (a.k.a. Copacabana Records). As a result, some of the original albums were re-released on Lp and on CD a few years later.

Al Hirt at Dan's Pier 600, the Swingin' Dixie vol. 1 was one that made to CD. It was manufactured in Manaus (north of the country) by Sonopress. It is reasonable to assume that they used the same master tape that was used for the Lp version, because in both of them the left and right channels are reversed, I don't really know why. And I know they are reversed because I happened to own the original 7 1/2 i.p.s. 4-track open reel tape, so that comparisons were made obvious for me.

During my Lp era I had all the four volumes of the Swingin' Dixie series, three of them never released to CD, even by Som themselves. In the mid-1990s I had already lost all my hope to see these recordings back on CD, so I made an effort to transfer those Lps to my PC, clean them up and transfer to CD-R meticulously.

If you're an Al Hirt fan you'll know what to expect from this compilation of three late fifties Audio Fidelity stereo LPs, all entitled "Swingin' Dixie" (at Dan's Pier 600 in New Orleans). The music is quite relentlessly loud and that, coupled with Al's machine-gun delivery (what Scott Yanow described as "a propensity for playing far too many notes") does not encourage prolonged listening. The line-up of the Dixieland Six was static throughout, despite clarinettist Harold Cooper's limitations, but trombonist Bob Havens more than compensates, and the rhythm section works wonders, particularly in the faster numbers, of which there are many. The stand-out tracks for me are "Fidgety Feet", "I Can't Get Started" and Lullaby of Birdland", but overall the music takes second place to Al's technical proficiency.

Are You Kidding? 4 July 2013

I discovered these LPs in my fathers' record collection when I was in college back in the 70's. I have hoped for several decades that someone would keep the spirit of Al Hirt's early Dixieland recordings alive by re-issuing these gems on CD. Even on trips to New Orleans, these could not be found in any format.
What a disappointment! Disc 1 would not even play on my two home stereos. When I finally got to hear it in my car, I realized that this release is simply a recording of the LP. And what a terrible LP was used!
Ticks, pops, scuffs...... This must have been someone's favorite copy of the record back in the 50's. It is worn out and ruined unlistenable by the standards of today. It is advertised as "REMASTERED". In what context can that statement possibly be true? The performances are superb Dixieland Jazz, full of life and joy. But this re-release by Jasmine was obviously done on the cheap cheap cheap. What a loss. I am surprised that the previous 2 reviews do not mention any of this, giving 4 and 5 stars. Are their copies different from mine?
I purchased this from Import CDs by way of Amazon, and I am sending it back tomorrow. Is there a better version out there somewhere?

Al Hirt has had some rally great performances in the past but this one is just too busy and upbeat for my tastes. The recording quality is good but for the most part this CD sits on the shelf.

This collection of standards, some strictly dixieland but not all, is Al Hirt coming into his own as a trumpet player. I don't know where to begin on how much fun these recordings are to listen to, so I'll start by saying THANK YOU Jasmine Records for making all this jazz available to us who love and adore Al and his music. You will not believe the quality of the musicianship that surrounds Him even at this early juncture in his blossoming career. Al and his band sail through these compositions with such ease I wonder if most of them were a first take. The cadenza on I Can't Get Started is reason enough to buy this CD, but trust me you'll hear a lot more than that.

When I got my first stereo in the 1970's I found 2 albums at a garage sale and Vol. 2 of Swinging Dixie and Louis Armstrong's Hello Dolly. Man did I wear those OUT! Anyway I hope you will enjoy these 3 fine volumes of Dixieland and all out jazz. If you're a jazz purist then BEWARE! You might just lose your stiffness and find your toes tapping. Al always did have a sense of humor and never took himself to seriously.

Get it!
