Product Description

Although best known as an actress, having made her film debut before the age of 16, Diana Dors made several attempts at a recording career. Her first recordings were made in 1951 for HMV, followed nine years later by the only album she ever made, Swingin Dors. By then a major celebrity, Swingin Dors was, as the title might imply, a swing album featuring an orchestra conducted by Wally Stott. Whilst not a chart success the album has become something of a collectors item in ensuing years

I was half desapointed, half thrilled when I got this cd: first, it's a very rare recording, which I bought 20 years ago when it was re-issued on a EMI LP.
But this digipack-CD is not the Lp in more ways than one: it's a far too luxurious digipack, and it makes it all the more fragile: it's central opening (like the first LP) makes it half open all the time when still, the additional paper sleeve to protect the cd is uneasy to use. beware when you open it, it might take a bit of the cover with it (it did on mine), that is, to put it in a nutshell, what was amazing on a Lp isn't on a CD (different size, different effects). the booklet is lovely, full of nice fotos, but, be carefull, it is not attached to the CD, so don't lose it!
the mix of the recording is modern: that is, the (lovely) voice of Diana Dors is...behind the band rather than ahead, and you hear more of the orchestra than her voice, which was not the original sound. there is nothing like an old good LP, folks! this cd is a must-have only for those who don't have the LP in mind. All in all, it was about time to re issue this Lp on a cd. but maybe a mere CD would have done. This one is too complicated to handle easily, too fragile. historical recording data would also have been a plus; Who sings along (male voice) in "tired of love"? when and where was it recorded? how many tracks, etc, etc...

This is the long-awaited release of the CD of the fabulous 'Swingin' Dors' album. This was Britain's most glamorous star of the fifties.

Diana Dors had all the Hollywood style and glamour, but remained truly British. She was one of only a handful of glamour stars from that period that did not sell herself for leading roles in big pictures - hence she lost out on many major films, but those she did make were extremely memorable. She was a great star and had all the glamour right to the end - indeed the whole TV screen would 'light up' whenever she appeared - here she left us a tremendous legacy - apart from her films, in this original recording from her big year 1960!

There are twelve great songs and she had a great voice to match on this. One song is from a movie she starred in (but did not sing the song in the film) 'An Alligator Named Daisy', called: 'I'm In Love For The Very First Time'. Some catchy numbers on this. Diana Dors did not release enough material at the time, but today she would have had more scope and opportunity to utilise her multi-talents. She was from a time when multi-talented stars were pretty thin on the ground. It's incredible that it has taken SO long for this album to be issued on CD - more than 23 years after her untimely death. Indeed, her album wasn't even re-released on vinyl until two years after she had died, and puzzling still, that there was no issue of a CD at that time either.

Diana Dors truly glamourous actress/entertainer as demonstrated on the recording here, love all the tracks on the album. Like the previous reviewer I have the earlier Japenese release CD which has fantastic sound quality, but as a fan I have also bought this version because of its insert with lovely pictures of Dors, but than if you are a Dors's fan its a must... just for the cover alone is worth it.

Just one note for collectors: actually, this is not the first cd reissue of this nice album. A limited edition, in card gatefold sleeve, was released in Japan few years ago. It's an original record, perfectly remastered. I got it immediately, when I found it.
Diana is not well known in Italy, but I like her very much, from the moment I saw her on tv, in an italian movie, "La ragazza del Palio" with Vittorio Gassman. I've seen her in other roles, movies and tv, and I think she was a beautiful lady and a gifted artist.

Had this as a record more than twenty years ago and it sounded pretty good even then, bought the CD this year and it reminded me of just how good it still is. It's a very simple album with Diana's vocals centre stage without being swamped by the arrangements, considering this was recorded in the early sixties the quality is superb. I know Miss Dors is not generally known as a singer but give this album a try, it's something a little different for your CD collection. I play this album all the time and my friends still haven't guessed who's singing.

Wow!I'm in my mid-forties so Ms.Dors was part of my young TV experience and she was a great figure in the world of film, comedy and light entertainment. However,I didn't know about her singing prowess until I heard a track of hers on BBC 2 Radio's Sounds Of The Sixties - I think it was this programme. The track blew me away and luckily I was able to find this CD album as a promo last October. The orchestral arrangements and performance by Wally Stott are truly swinging. So,record company - why is it not on general release???
