A Great Introduction to some Great Songs,
This review is from: Swing (Audio CD)
I am a big jazz fan, and my favourite jazz style is Swing. It has such an upbeat, dancy feel to it that can brighten up even the dullest day. 'Swing' is a fine compilation of classic songs from the golden era of swing. It contains the definative versions of some great songs (eg 'Beyond the sea', Bobby Darin; 'Satin Doll' Duke Ellington; 'Very thought of you', Billie Holiday) and some lesser known tunes. All the recordings on this album are good and clear. On some compilation CD's the recordings are live or have poor quality sound, but that is not the case on 'Swing'. Listening to this album will put you in the mood for spending lazy summer afternoons in the garden, with a glass of beer and a barbeque going. It is a great album to listen to whenever you need cheering up. Having said that not all the songs included in this album are up tempo. There are also some ballads included, which overall give the album a nice balanced flow. If you are looking for an introduction to swing and jazz music, but would prefer to avoid the Robbie Williams copycat formuler (not that I'm knocking him - I hold respect for him for trying to bring yesterday's music to today's generation) then this is a great starting point. There are some obvious ommisions (where's Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin?) which is why it loses a star, but overall a great feel good album.
