Book Description

1 April 2007
Swinesend, hallowed public school and home to all sorts of
boys (and now girls), has for too long gone unnoticed. But thanks to this
frank guide, those not lucky enough to have attended this extraordinarily
preserved institution can now experience life as a Swinesian for
themselves. Apart from its academic record, which is quite literally in a
league of its own, everything you need to know about this unique
institution is here, including:

Sports: manly pursuits such as animal cruelty and `Hackers' seal
Swinesend's reputation as a school of hard knocks.

Culture: from the Combined Cadet Force Marching Band (described as `a
musical form of shock and awe') to the Self Abuse Society, a Swinesend
education encourages all forms of self-expression.

World-class facilities: from its online gaming site to its new Cage
Fighting arena, Swinesend is hurling itself into the 21st century whilst
maintaining its rich legacy.

Heritage: ancient traditions such as `Steg Burning' and `Toasting the
Simpletons' are still central to school life.

This indispensable handbook ensures that everyone can feel as though
they have attended this singular establishment and - for the price of an
hour's fees - pass themselves off as true Swinesians: the recipients of a
truly unforgettable education that they will never be able to blot from
their mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost too close for comfort. 4 April 2007
I was sceptical about this book to the begin with and suspected it would be a grumbling take on all the usual old school themes, but I was surprised to find that it is actually a sharp, and often hilariously cruel send-up not just of public school life, but of pomposity, mealy-mouthed managerial types, ossified teachers and the innate viciousness of adolescent boys who are locked up together for five years or more. The offbeat flowcharts, the bizarre rules and the weird slang (look up "Parse Bandit') pepper a book that guides you through the ups and (more frequently) downs of life in a minor public school. And in many places the fiction is almost too close to real life for comfort, especially if (like me) you attended such a school.

Recommended.

If you went to a public/private school you'll find all this horribly familiar and utterly brilliant.....The perfect gift for any alumni of St.Cakes etc...

4.0 out of 5 stars Bring Back the Birch? 26 Jun 2007
This book is a hilarious swipe at the British public school system. Having been subjected to that experience myself some fifty years ago, I recognized much of what these younger products of that system had to say--though the presence of girls (included here, but undreamed of in my day!) would have done much to cheer me up. My only reservation: you guys are too kind! Oh, and has caning gone out of style?
