Dated and dull 10 Nov 2010
By _*
Format:Paperback
I borrowed this from my sister, I am glad I didn't pay for it. I've read most of the books she has written as Sophie Kinsella, so I was expecting something a little bit more like that. However, I found this book very boring. The characters were 2-dimensional and mostly unpleasant, even when you were supposed to empathise with them. The spineless parents were easily led by a manipulative lawyer to sue their friends, and their intermittent bursts of rationality were easily headed off by the most obvious ploys. The content and style struck me as old-fashioned, reminding me of a poor attempt at Mary Wesley. The subject was miserable, the people in the book were miserable, and I was miserable by the time I'd finished it. Had it not been borrowed, I would have immediately given it to charity. As it is, I don't recommend it at all, especially if you've enjoyed the Shopaholic books or her other novels.

A very enjoyable read 24 Sep 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This was the first book by Madeleine Whickham that I had read, having enjoyed all of her books under her pen-name of Sophie Kinsella. I wasn't disappointed and found it absorbing and the characters believable. I'm definitely going to read more of her books.

A relaxing easy read 19 Jan 2005
Format:Paperback
This is the first of Madeleine's books I have read, although I have read her other books under the writer of Sophie Kinsella.

Did not really know what to expect, but quickly became engrossed in Swimming Pool Sunday, which is set in an country village. Reminded me a bit of Midsomer Murders but without the murder, kept me turning the page and wanting to find out what happens in the end. Really enjoyed the book and am looking forward to reading many more.

Rather dull and predictable
I found this book easy to read with an interesting story line, however it has quite a predictable ending and I found it rather dull in parts. Read more

Not the usual laugh a minute you may expect from Sophie Kinsella
I enjoyed this book but not half as much of any of her later works from Shopaholic onwards. Consequently I probably won't bother with any of her other earlier books.

Another Madeleine Wickham to enjoy....
Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella is just not my thing. But I am enjoying reading Madeleine Wickham's tales

Typical sunny day in the village. There's an accident. Turmoil. Read more

Good read
This is the first I've read as Madeleine Wickham but I've read all the Sophie Kinsella books. Jury's still out for me. I prefer the 'Sophie' style of writing. Read more

A little disappointing, but not awful
I've read quite a few Sophie Kinsella books, including all of the Shopaholic series. This book wasn't one of her best if I'm honest. Read more
