Format: Paperback
This book is the product of a brilliant idea. A clue lies on the back cover: "Turn a rucksack into a swimsac and set off across lakes, down rivers, out to islands".

If you think this is a somewhat quirky idea, do NOT be put off. Inside the book, all is revealed. As Peter Hayes tells us in a very funny introduction, with a swimsac we can all become like frogs going on endless journeys across land and water without being tied to where we enter the water. Instead, we can now swim to the other side and keep right on going!!

What makes this book extra special is the combination of routes, funny anecdotes (the book is full of them), beautifully drawn maps and cartoons. Peter Hayes possesses the writing (and illustrating) talents of the very best travel writer - The ability to entertain and make the reader laugh all the way through the book. A simply tremendous book.

This is a gem of a book. I picked it up, thinking it would be for extreme sports fanatics, but no, although Peter Hayes obviously likes a swim in the wild, he recognises there are wimps out there who don't really want to leave the shoreline. As well as suggested routes, with maps and cartoons, the book's full of witty asides, anecdotes and reflections on life. Alongside a copy of Wainwright, this book is going with me next time I go to the Lakes. It will be like having a slightly eccentric uncle pointing out the interesting bits I would otherwise miss - wonderful.

I thought this book was great. It is hilariously funny in parts, but at the same time it is informative and helpful in suggesting walks and swims in the Lake District. I must admit the thought of some of those swims in the lakes makes me feel cold typing this, but I am inspired by the walks, which I could just about manage. My recommendation is BUY IT and enjoy.
