- With SwimFin, the lower you are in the water the more support it provides, as would be the case with a beginner. The higher you are in the water the less support it gives you as would be the case with an improving swimmer. SwimFin compensates for different abilities. SwimFin makes learning to swim fun, but even after it has done its job as a learning aid, it will always find use as a water toy, strengthening ability and building confidence.
- SwimFin is the first truly new development in swimming aids for decades. Worn on the back, it does not hamper or restrict the ability to move in the water. Unlike armbands, discs, life vests and noodles, SwimFin is streamlined and does not need to be inflated and deflated to add or reduce support.
- It's a fact that the human body is naturally buoyant: we don't sink to the bottom of the pool and crawl along the floor like a crab. By using too much buoyancy assistance other floatation aids lift the body unnaturally in the water and if positioned wrongly on the body, can tip it forward. When this happens, the body acts on a see-saw principle which then forces the swimmers face into the water as the hips and legs come up (which in most cases causes panic). Because SwimFin is predominantly vertical and out of the water, it works in harmony with the users natural buoyancy level. By promoting the shark / dolphin image children are more inclined to voluntarily put their faces into the water, enhancing body position and making movement through the water easier.
- SwimFin is a flotation device that provides as much buoyancy as the swimmer needs while helping maintain a good body position in the water. Other instruction aids tend to tip the swimmer forward or hold them upright, resulting in a swimming position that impedes movement through the water and actually makes swimming more difficult. SwimFin on the other hand gives only the support needed, giving the user the FEEL of independence and thus encouragement and motivation. If your child feels in control, confidence will definitely grow and they will learn quicker.
- SwimFin has recently been endorsed by the ASA (Amateur Swimming Association) in the UK and is the only swimming aid to win their approval. How does it work?
With the beginner, the body is lower in the water causing SwimFin to be more submerged (imagine pushing a beach ball under the water). This gives the swimmer more uplift and support without the arms being restricted (as can be the case using armbands). For the really confident beginners SwimFin could replace the armbands forever!
As confidence grows, there is a more improved body position [and this is the clever bit] SwimFin appears more out of the water and now gives a little less support. Generally at this stage of the swimmers progression the armbands or other devices would be reduced. SwimFin does it automatically, working with the swimmers natural ability but also giving immediate support if required. The swimmer learns to trust their SwimFin.
In a horizontal position, SwimFin is virtually out of the water giving very little or no support. However the learner grows in confidence knowing that support is there if needed. Even better swimmers can wear it all the time. Remember, if it is out of the water it is no longer a buoyancy aid and because it is streamlined, will not impede movement through the water.
SwimFin is also great for swimming on the back. The learner simply leans on the SwimFin and, because it provides maximum uplift (the beach ball syndrome) it replaces the need for teacher or parent to provide support. It also works in a keel like fashion (as on a yacht) giving stability. This encourages a better streamlined leg kick which in turn helps to establish balance. If required, the swimmer only needs to roll to the side and SwimFin will turn the child onto its front and help establish and maintain a safe and secure standing upright position in the water.
It attaches to the swimmers back with two velcro straps (supplied), one under the arms and the other round the waist. It is made from crossed linked, closed cell expanded polyethylene and weighs 160g.

I purchased the swimfin for my 5 year old grandson after hearing about it on holiday. As in the picture, it is fin shaped, comes in great colours and fits round the body with two adjustable straps.
Although he can't swim properly he is fairly confident in water, but with the swimfin he was off like a rocket and immediately swum a width, just like that. He is delighted with the idea of being mistaken for a shark and is looking forward to wearing it in the sea for maximum effect.
I'd say it does everything it says. Any criticism I have is about product information. I wasn't aware until after my purchase that it comes in different sizes/weights, and it was only by luck that we have the one we need. The backpack looked interesting, but it was a while before I worked out that it wasn't any kind of additional buoyancy aid, but just a neat way of carrying everything around. Information could be a lot clearer and more detailed, especially on the official website.
The sad thing is that he is not allowed to wear it at his school swimming lessons, not at swim club which cuts down his opportunity to use it quite a bit. I don't know whether this is because the teachers don't know what it does, or just a general ban on any kind of aid. Either way it's a shame as it does add fun and confidence to his swimming sessions.

does all it says as far as bouyancy is concerned and my little boy loved it, we had a few onlookers saying how cool it was too BUT the straps used to connect it are quite stiff and after one afternoon in the pool while away for the weekend my little boy got all cut under the arm, he hasn't been able to go in the pool again until now. Trouble is he is going to want his "sharky thing" and I am thinking I would rather he went back to armbands. He gets a better range of movement with it but as well as the under the arm cutting where the fin sits on his back has gone really dry.

I purchased this item after looking at the reviews on Amazon, I noticed a few comments regarding sizing on the product so I thought I would email Swimfin direct to find out more information. They were incredibly helpful and one size does literally fit all, the sizing on the packaging is legal info to do with life jacket properties. They do straps for larger children and adults.
I was looking for an alternative to the tummy band for my son who needed a little more confidence in the water and this seemed to fit the bill totally. He loved the concept of the shark fin and couldn't wait to give it a try. It did wonders for his confidence and was soon flying around on his front and back. I would very highly recommend this product, I shall be trying it on my niece who has never swam before, be interesting to see the results with her.
