About the Author

Since getting her start in triathlon in 1986, Gale Bernhardt has become one of triathlon s premier coaches. She was selected to coach the men s and women s triathlon teams for both the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, and the 2003 Pan American Games, and she served as a world cup coach for the International Triathlon Union development squad. Over the course of his coaching career, Nick Hansen has been at the helm of some of the nation s most prestigious swimming programs: U.S. National Team swimming coach, University of Wisconsin head coach, University of Arizona assistant coach, and masters swim coach. Nick holds a graduate degree in exercise physiology and formerly served at the University of Wisconsin Sports Medicine Clinic.

My husband loves this and takes it to the pool 3 times a week to challenge and improve his swimming. He has shared it with swimming buddies too who have also gone and bought it! He was a non swimmer 4 years ago but thanks to adult lessons is now a capable pool and open water swimmer, but wanted some ideas to make his practices more interesting and useful. The pages are water resistant so can be used at poolside. The other swimmers sometimes use it to set a training session for themselves too. Highly recommended.

Bought this book after my first triathlon....only can swim breastroke but still managing to pass out alot of freestylers...so i decided that i need to seriously work on freestyle....but there are no training plans to build yourself up to level required....however, excellent workouts for those who have the time and already have a good base of swim freestyle fitness already....just not much use for me at the moment

Really happy - great sessions. I would say that the abbreviations are quite complicated, but once you've figured out what they all mean then the sessions are good. Mostly orientated for olympic distance to ironman - but great for me as this is the distance I prefer. Excellent guide, would recommend for workouts on your own!

This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to bring some structure to their swim sessions. The book splits sessions down into areas such as endurance, form and speed. This enables you to improve in a variety of areas. By breaking the sessions down into drills it enables you to swim further than you probably would do normally but keeps the workout interesting. Being waterproof is excellent so you can really make the most of it as it can sit by the pool so you don't lose track of what your doing. I'm using it to help me train for my first Olympic distance triathlon and I highly recommend this book. The training plans in it are a little daunting at first as even the beginner ones have you swimming nearly 3k but you can tailor them to your needs really easily. Overall a brilliant book. If you want to improve your swimming discipline then look no further!

Excellent book for the self training triathlete. Some of the drills my coach gets me doing are very similar to this book and they actually work!

The 30-mins sessions come in really handy if you are strapped for time and need a shorter go-to workout.

The pages are all waterproof so leaving this at the edge of the pool isnt a problem.

Just needs a few pages of blank sheets for you to mark progress and it would b perfect :)

has given structure to a replacement session. Instead of running 5 k as part of my track training as I have an ongoing calf injury I replaced with 2 swim sessions to take the impact out. The book is well laid out and I can easily cut or adjust to fit in on the time I have available. as there is structure there is no time wastage so benefit all round

I have been swimming for about 2 1/2 years and in this time i have comleted 2 ironman events. I usually just make up a plan as I go along. This workout book gives structure to my training and is simular to the swim fit sessions that I attend.
I would recommend this book to anybody who want to structure their swimming or group session

it's almost like having a coach at the pool with you. I train several times a week as I enter long distance open water swim events. I always get bored as I do the same things over and over again but this book is great as I choose a different workout on each session and I honestly feel over a few weeks my stamina and speed have improved.
