Product Description

Review

'Pitched at the intermediate and above swimmer, as well as their coaches, the book is nothing if not comprehensive. SwimSmooth has always sought to make its training resources accessible and the book follows this easy approach. Language and tone is understated but its power is in its ability to communicate ideas with casual ease. It's an excellent compendium of work and sits well with SwimSmooth's website, DVDs and blogs.' if Tina Turner wrote swimming books! this book is simply the best swim resource out there, it covers the swim smooth methodology fully so is a fantastic resource to improve your stroke, however you swim. as a swim and tri coach and as a competitive triathlete i have hundreds of dvds, books & swim course material, this one book wraps it into one neat bundle. good clear simple photos and explanations, if you combine this with the catch masterclass dvd you can not fail to go faster in the pool. if you only intend to own one swim book, make this the one!

Paul Newsome enables us to swim faster and with less effort. Yes, it really does work. He has applied scientific method to the dynamics and mechanics of swimming, and this book shows us how to apply these techniques to improve our efficiency in moving through the water. I will never be a Tri-athlete because my knees and ankles will crumble away, but I can swim much further than I can run, and I noticed an immediate improvement in my swimming efficiency in the first session after a careful cover-to-cover read of the book.

The book is broken down into relevant sections:
1. Getting Started, three chapters show how to use the book and what to expect from it;
2. Technique, twenty-three chapters and half the book on the details of the stroke and how they apply to the different `Swim Types' we all tend to slot into;
3. Training, nine chapters explaining why and how we should train to prevent injury and maximise efficiency;
4. Open Water, seven chapters on why it is so different from a pool and why we should be thinking about the skills even if we don't swim triathlons;
5. Three Appendices, sixty pages full of further details on stroke, correction of bad habits, drills, and example training sessions

All the chapters are well illustrated with photos and diagrams and clearly explained without too much repetition. Despite being a late learner of swimming, shamed into it when SWMBO and Hon No2 Daughter decided to take it up, and now solidly grooved into my bad habits, I found it was a fascinating read; the scales fell from my eyes.

I found the sections on Swim Types a revelation (almost a decade of using the methods of

An excellent book - vey easy to read, great explanations, diagrams and pictures.

I've recently taken up swimming (in my 40s) in preparation for an Ironman event. Being fit and being swim fit are two totally different things and whilst I'd been able to run marathons in the past, swimming 2 lengths of the 25m pool had me gasping for breath!

This book helped to refine my swimming technique so that I no longer battle against the water, rather swim with the flow. The book categorises different types of swimmers and provides clear guidance, tips and drills to help improve your style so that you can maximise your performance in the pool. I now actively look forward to my swims. Great book - thoroughly recommended.

Triathletes have always known that if you really want to be a good swimmer then you had to have been a club swimmer when you were a child. The technique is just too hard to pick up at an older age.
Well the good news is Swim Smooth breaks that myth, by giving easy to apply advise for specific types of swimmers to help achieve an efficient swimming style. Of course you want be great just by reading the book! It still takes time and effort to become a good swimmer, but this will make it possible to achive your potential quicker and easier. I first became a fan of Swim Smooth through their website and have followed their advice ever since.

This is a superb book. People who haven't read other swim books won't appreciate how brilliant it is. I followed the Total Immersion method for 5 years while training for Ironman triathlons, getting slower and never achieving the "big breakthough", and the final straw was coming 3rd from last in a swim field of 750 this year . Swimsmooth quickly helped me understand where I've been going wrong, given me clear steps for improvement, and I am already quicker. They describe swimming as " a kinetic chain of interlinked events", and they have an integrated, whole-system approach to swim coaching and training. They have obviously thought very deeply about the science of swimming, but they present detailed and deep topics in a clear, well writen, and down to earth way , with 100s of useful photos. They don't just tell you to do something, they tell you why, and the consequences of not doing it. A major innovation is their marketing approach of segmenting swimmers into different Types, with different prescriptions for each Type. It is suitable for everyone from beginner to elite, and is especially useful for open water swimmers, giving clear and detailed guidance on how to adapt your stroke.
