This is the second cutting wire I've purchased. The first one was not level. You could see that the first cuts in the metal frame were not even on both sides one was much higher than the other above the rubber feet. When I turned the slice around you could see it was thicker at one side. I kept it because I did find it easy to slice but I strightened it by by hand. I did however for the price think I would give it another go incase I was unlucky. The second one has no tension. I should have sent it back but by the time I had packed it up paid postage and wasted more time going to post office I could'nt be bothered, plus I was a few weeks before I tried it. My advice would be don't bother. If you want to level a cake buy a cake board that fits in your tin. Place your cake on the board and put it back in the tin, the board will raise it above the sides of the tin so you can slice your cake level across the top of the tin.

I read the reviews before buying this but went ahead and bought it anyway because there wasn't really an alternative. I really pleased that I did. Admittedly it doesn't have a serrated knife type blade but the wire is textured rather than smooth and I think that's what kitchen craft mean when they call it a serrated blade.
I have used it on a few occasions now with great success. You have to use a sawing motion and you have to move through the cake slowly and not rush. If you do this it works perfectly. I have used it on denser cakes like madeira with no problem, both to remove the top and to cut them in half. I find that because it has an adjustable height I am able to remove just what I want, and get a nice smooth, flat finish.
Overall, I think for the money, it does a brilliant job and I'm glad I have one!

Hi i am so disapointed with the cake wire cutter i made a sponge cake and wanted to cut into 3.I used the cutter per instructions it was a NON STARTER.1 to adjust the ht. i found the device flimsy i think it will snap if it was adjusted on a regular basis.2 when trying to cut the sponge the cutter would hardly make a impression yet alone cut through the sponge.I belive it would be a great product if the manufacturer would put decent sharp wire and stonger wire supports in.As it is i wasted money and re think anew idea of a cake .Thankyou IJH.

Expected a serrated blade as that is what the information on the packaging and advertising says, yet its just a wire, no serrations. I do think Amazon should contact the seller to take them to task for using false advertising.

It's a great size, works ok, but would be far far better with a serrated blade as only any good for soft sponges!

This is a good product over all - it does what it's supposed to do (remember to let your cake cool down completely before attempting to cut it!). The only real complaint I have is that the wire could do with a higher level than it has. The picture makes the item look a lot taller than it actually is! Still, good value for money.

I read the reviews on this product and thought wow! so I bought one.

However, i used this last weekend and it is awful! I made a very light sponge cake and it wouldn't cut through. The cake wasn't even burnt or anything.
I also noticed the wire has got a dent in it!

I am not happy with this...in future I will just use a knife, I do a better job cutting it straight than this wire does.

This was OK if only all the right circumstances exist and you have 3 arms.

It is more like a cheese wire than a cutting tool, but whereas a cheese wire is great for cutting through solid blocks of cheese it would simply squash and crush something as soft as a sponge. It needs a sawing action with a little serration to cut through sponge.

Once I had leveled the wire and bent the legs out slightly to improve the tension I wasn't able to simply pass the wire through. I had to have someone hold the sponge whilst I had a hand on each side of the cutter. I then applied pressure and had to saw back and forth to break through the crust (no it wasn't over cooked!). Once that was done it was a little easier. It helped to have the cake rotated as I went along. You had to be careful not to lean the cutter as this alters the depth of the cut (hence why it was easier to move the cake around whilst I kept the cutter perfectly upright.

When the cake was finally cut it was a very nice and clean cut through, but it just wasn't worth the messing about. Had this had a blade similar to the survival wire saws it would have been a bit messier with crumbs, but a lot easier to do.

On the plus side, if you remove the wire and wrap it around wooden dowels it makes for a good cheese wire!

Unless I'm facing translation issues, in spite of in description of this product has something like "Strong carbon steel serrated blade for a clean cut", the blade is not serrated. As I bought this just because this feature, I'm a little bit upset.
