Book Description

From the author of Silent Sisters and Behind Closed Doors comes a fiction debut based on a true story

Product Description

It is the summer of 1976, the hottest summer on record.

In the heart of London's bustling East End lies a tight-knit community of families. They lead a very traditional way of life, the men are down the pub, the women are gossiping at the toddler group in the working men's club and the children stay out late in the long summer evenings, playing in the park and roaming the streets carefree.

In the sweltering heat, Grace Ballantyne leaves her son Adam playing in his toy car in the garden. When she returns, she finds the door to the car open and her four-year-old son is nowhere in sight. As Grace frantically searches, panic creeps in and so the nightmare begins.

A series of horrific assaults on young children spreads through the neighbourhood, each one more brutal; there is only so much this close community can take. As they cling to one another for hope and survival, the men beat up the school caretaker who they believe to be the perpetrator of this twisted abuse. But have they got the right man?

Finally, it is the women who take control. In a battle to protect their families - and seek revenge - they make sure the attacker gets his just desserts.

I agree with all the other reviews wholeheartedly. This book is DISTURBING! right from the off and I got to page 51 I think it was before putting it down for a good few days before giving it another chance. Now I'm on page 90 something and it hasn't gotten any better but I really want to know who this murderer and abuser is BUT really not sure if my stomach can handle reading on at this point!. As the graphic details and so forth has been mentioned so much in other reviews, I wanted to bring up another point which I find totally beyond belief and sickening! A lad in the book is disabled, he was clearly set upon by the neighbourhood and in one part, viciously attacked by a gang of 'revenge seekers' (he was FALSELY accused) but the language used to describe him in this book was EVIL!! My son is disabled and this is what offended me more-so than the graphic details of child rape and murders etc. Language such as spastic, retard, the 'C***' word etc etc are just a few. It really is appalling writing and insulting on disabled kids, parents and abuse victims alike! This book should NEVER have been released and should be removed from shelves. This is a peadaphile's dream come true! Sickening... just sickening!!!
Whilst writing this review, it's brought back just how angry I am about this book and therefore has answered my own question from earlier... this book is going in the bin unfinished!
If I could have awarded this book zero stars, I would have done!

This is a really horrible horrible book. How anyone could write such things I find hard to understand. We did not need all the graphic details. I thought I was buying a who-dun-it . Obviously I did not read the back cover description properly. I would advise people not to buy this. It is horrible.

made me feel sick! 2 Feb 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is discusting in many ways. Firstly the graphic descriptions of child rape, secondly the language used to describe a disabled boy and thirdly for the stereotypes it uses. Ifelt physically sick reading the graphic description of how these children suffer. Even though its fiction i believe this book goes way past the line of what is decent and what is allowed to be printed in the first place. I finished it eventually but it has left a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. i dontrecommend this book and its definitly not one for teenagers

2nd Jenny Tomlin read.
As 'send me no flowers' was such a good read I went straight on to 'sweetie' this was not as good or racy, the story line was rather predictable but non-the less not a bad read.

Mixed feelings
I agree with a lot of the other reviewers about the descriptions of child abuse being too graphic. We know it goes on and in my opinion we don't need such awful descriptions. Read more

Far too graphic
I felt the story was far too graphic about child rape and abuse, there was no need to go into so much detail. I couldn't finish the book as it was far too distressing. Read more
