Stumbled over this by chance and how pleased I am to have done so! Set in the US civil war (though no battle scenes as it all takes place in an army training camp for new recruits prior to them marching off to fight) it centres on two very complex characters (Johnathan & Esher) who meet and fall in love (although I doubt either one would describe it that way). But its so much more than a simple m/m romance. It gripped me from beginning to end and its been awhile since I stayed up late to finish a book!
Johnathan & Esher are the core of the story but there is so much else going on around them - all the other characters are richly drawn and "real". The story moves from tragedy to comedy to violence to tenderness and around again - and it does it all so naturally! I think this is a first novel from the author and she should be applauded for what she has produced. A second installment is apparently a work-in-progress and certainly the strory arc needs to continue - so I very much look forward to it being published.
A joy to have read it.

This novel won first place in the 2012 San Francisco Book Festival for Gay fiction. Well deserved! Wonderful characters. Anyone who has ever had their life's agenda disrupted by love can relate.
A surprisingly good read 17 May 2013

I don't like war. I think that the Civil War was a tragedy. I know very little about the history of gay men. The only thing that got me to read this in first place is that I used to know the author and like her. So I was surprised to find Sweetgrass to be a compelling and very well-written story. I highly recommend this book!
Sweetgrass - A Sweet Surprise 11 Aug 2012
By Robin T. Tucker - Published on Amazon.com

Sweetgrass is a startling surprise. The story weaves the violence of war with a tender love story as endearing as Brokeback Mountain. On the battlefields of the Civil War we are reminded of men's yearning for connection and love, even more when surrounded by the natural acceptance of death and destruction. Johnathan and Esher, men from vastly different worlds, find each other in the midst of the chaotic structure of military life in a battlezone. I was drawn into the life that men faced fighting a war the politics of which may have meant little to them. Lives on the prairie interrupted to serve your country and maybe earn enough to buy a little farm, or to save the farm that would now be your widows. I was sitting on a log by the campfire with men who yearned for the touch of their wives yet understood their duty to country. Sweetgrass took me to the heart of the Civil War; love and loss, and men who want to change the world.
A wonderful surprise that I can't recommend highly enough... 23 Jan 2012

I thought I was buying a book about the Civil War, and it was, but it also turned out to be so much more. A great story line, the strange combination of complexity and simplicity of the two main characters, an accumulation of interesting supporting characters all make a fascinating story that will keep you up all night. Set in the camp of the Union soldiers, a tale of innocence and determination unfold. The story takes place as the men wait for their marching orders to go to war. This powerful, rich, exciting, and down-to-earth story has become one of my favorite m/m romances from a wonderful new writer. This is neither a fluff piece nor a book requiring a doctorate in U.S. history to fully appreciate. You will be disappointed if you are looking for pages of sex-filled crazy ways in the army, but you will find much tenderness in the love making between the main characters in this great story. Apparently, this is a series of four books, and I am avidly awaiting the next installment.
