Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
With chick-flick stalwarts like Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts and the Sex and the City crew pushing 40, The Sweetest Thing lowers the demographic to the late-20s and stirs in some of that Farrelly Bros/American Pie-style gross-out stuff to liven up the usual man-chasing, clothes-shopping and hug-and-squealsome female bonding.

Cameron Diaz plays a party-hearty miss who claims to prefer "Mr Right Now" over "Mr Right". Although she gains most of her laughs by treating various men very badly, the plot still boils down to Diaz scurrying after nice guy Thomas Jane. Diaz and gal pal Christina Applegate endure several humiliations in a public toilet to crash a family wedding so she can cosy up to Thomas. Their friend Selma Blair has bizarre sexual adventures back home with a pick-up who dresses as a cartoon elephant.

Set mostly in San Francisco--an unfortunate city for women who like high heels as much as these heroines do--the film stops every few minutes for strange attempts at musical numbers (the big ensemble piece is called "Your Penis Is So Large") and seems entirely to miss the irony when a golden oldie prompts Diaz to wax nostalgic about the far-off halcyon days of 1994. The leads are appealing enough to get away with characters who are as nasty and shallow as they are cute, but director Roger Kumble too often mistakes outrageous for inventive.

On the DVD: The Sweetest Thing contains one of the oddest commentaries ever recorded, with director Kumble and his cast on helium. This actually offers more laughs than the film, especially when the girls turn on Jason Bateman and give him a hard time for being in Teen Wolf Too. Also included are a selection of chick-flick trailers, storyboard comparisons, two featurettes, a snippetty making-of ("Politically Erect") and a witty spoof about the screenwriter ("A Legend Is Born: A Day in the Life of Nancy M Pimental"). --Kim Newman

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic!, 16 Mar 2003
OK, I'll admit, this film isn't exactly hollywood brain science. It is mindless comedy. The characters are shallow and bitchy. And no, it doesn't have some kind of sublime message in it. And you know what? That's alright. The real world isn't all doom and gloom and angst and pensive thinking so why should all movies be like that? Beleive it or not, women do go on a lot lie what these fab characters do and that's why it's so appealing, because many women can relate. The characters are very likeable, the gross-out moments aren't overly ridiculous (something which put me off watching American Pie.) and even the most romantic moments are realistically done...

I think the only people who won't like this movie are narrow-minded men (yes, some do still exsist. They're the ones who don't like Sex and the City because of the the way the girls behave)and miserable gits who need their movies serious and artsy. Anyone else will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Histerically funny!, 1 Jan 2006
By mineschu (cambridgeshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This is one of the funniest films ever! Christina Walters (Cameron Diaz) and one of her girlfriends Courteney (Christina Applegate) set off to a wedding after meeting Peter, who she thinks is the love of her life, in a club. A VERY funny film and highley reccommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chick flick?, 13 Jun 2004
By Simon Britton "stud-lol" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Some may describe this as another "chick flick", but I think its on a different level. By the time I finnish writing this review, this movie stands a good chance of overtaking "Pretty Woman" as my all time favourite. 'Why?' you may ask. I'll tell you why. This movie is EVERYTHING that Pretty Woman is, with humour to boot!

Ok, so as some of the reviewers have said, it may be deemed as a little crude, but theres SO MUCH truth in it, its unbelievable. Where as its normally the blokes who are shown as the crude, self-centred ones, this movie flips the script.
Cameron, Christina & Selma play 3 out-of luck girls; out of luck in the love department. Its not that the first 2 dont get LAID, just they cant seem to find 'Mr. Right'. Selma (Jane) seems to have found him, and is usually 'busy' with her man; even at work. One of the funny parts is when she's in the dry cleaners and EVERYONE who comes in, seems to know her. Even her old school teacher comes in with a class on a visit (dont know bout anyone ELSE but I never visited a laundry as a school outing; was usually a museum!)

The "Old guy", lets call him 'Gradpa', who pops up in a few places throughout the movie, helps us to understand that, just because you marry someone & have kids with them, you dont have to devote your ENTIRE life to them, especially after they've gone. People ALWAYS say to 'Grandpa', "I bet you miss Grandma" and the look on his face, and the way that he mumbles, just tells you how quite P*55ED off with it all he is.

The clever part of the film is when Cameron & Christina are in "Veras'" shop trying to find something to wear for the wedding they're about to 'crash'. Here, the writers have them doing a 'movie montage' of such greats as "Greece", "Desperate seeking Susan" aswell as my afore mentioned personal favourite, "Pretty Woman", to name but a few.

As said before, "The Sweetest Thing" stands a good chance of over-taking "Pretty Woman" as my all time favourite, and, as I conclude, I can now say it has reached that echelon.

A MUST see!
