His beginnings were with Curtis Mayfield in the Impressions (we include their biggest hit 'For Your Previous Love' as a bonus for reference) before going solo in 1960 and scoring a succession of major US hits. The association with Mayfield continued and a number of the songs included on this compilation are written by Mayfield, or by Mayfield and Butler together.
Other notable writers include Van McCoy, Barrett Strong, Don Covay, Lieber/Stoller, Bacharach & David. The latter pairing provided Butler with a massive hit in 1962 with the original version of 'Make It Easy On Yourself' covered later in the UK by the Walker Brothers. Also originally recorded by Butler was the song 'Moon River ', a top 20 US hit for him in 1961 and covered by Danny Williams in the UK.
In all Butler had 6 top 40 US pop hits (many more R&B hits) and they are all on this definitive overview of Butlers early 60's Soul career, before he signed with Mercury in 1967.

Track Listing Incorrect,

Great CD but note: the track listing on Amazon is incorrect; there are 27 tracks not 28 and the missing gem, and I mean gem, is 'Just a Little Bit'. Shame really as I just bought it for this track in particular.

This is a great cd...
Jerry's got such a great voice... and this is his best period, he had great songs... written by himself with Curtis Mayfield, and some written by Van McCoy, Leiber & Stoller etc., and the production is great... later in his career the production became overblown I think... here the music is fantastic and the sound is clean and crisp...Great job by the guys at RPM...

Vee Jay recordings of old favorites, outakes & rarities.,

Anybody who has an affinity for 1950's to early 1960's Chicago soul will really appreciate this little collection. Here we have some Jerry Butler & the Impressions tracks as well as Jerry Butler solo tracks featuring Curtis Mayfield accompaniment on guitar. Many of the songs here are composed by Mayfield. There are alternate takes and rarities of many Butler favorites that I had never heard before and the remastering is decent. This cd is a rare find indeed.
