Product Description

Influential singer-violinist Nancy Kerr launches her eagerly anticipated debut solo album Sweet Visitor. All songs written by Nancy Kerr – album produced by Andy Bell (Bellowhead,The Full English) featuring Martin Simpson, Emily Smith, Tim van Eyken, James Fagan, Tom Wright, Tim Yates, Rob Harbron, Jess Arrowsmith. Nancy is a 5 times Radio 2 Folk Award Winner: Horizon Award 2000; Best Duo 2003/2011 with James Fagan; Best Group and Best Album 2014 with The Full English. Nominated Best Original Song 2011 for Queen of Waters. Winner Best Album (Spiral earth 2011) for Twice Reflected Sun (Navigator041). Already a respected interpreter of traditional material, Nancy's emergence as a writer of rare style has drawn comparisons to William Blake in her reawakening of a radical folk mythology as a backdrop for contemporary narratives about love and conflict, motherhood, migration, hardship and jubilation, and the tensions between rural and urban life. "Nancy Kerr's songs are unusual, intriguing. Steeped in folksong, she nonetheless breaks out of the mould, coming sideways to her subject, embroidering it with detail and surprises until the focus of the song comes clear. She is such a good singer that sometimes you really have to concentrate to get the message - but it's worth it when you get it." Peggy Seeger. "Upon hearing Nancy Kerr for the first time I wanted to hear some more. The songs, the singing, the accompaniments, they meld together into a true sound of England." Christy Moore

It's been a great year so far for folk music, with some really superb releases, but Nancy Kerr's Sweet Visitor is, I think, the cherry on the cake, the cream of the crop. There's an alchemical quality to this album that elevates it to the ranks of the all-time greats.

From the proud grandeur of Never Ever Lay Them Down, to the delightfully chaotic My Little Drummer, this is a collection of beautifully crafted songs, full of gorgeous images and lovely melodies. The Sweet Visitor Band augments Nancy's characteristic voice and fiddle in all the right places; a stellar cast of musicians bring bouzouki, guitars, drums, banjo, concertina and bass, which combine in varying formations to carry these songs aloft and make them soar.

Lyrically, this album stands head and shoulders above anything I've heard in a long time. Nancy Kerr knows how to weave her words around a tune with an effortless precision, as she conjures the most luscious and enchanting poetry from deep in the bedrock of the folk tradition. Even on a cursory listening, you could probably write a book on the references and motifs in these songs, which are smart, subtle, and refreshingly original, yet pure Folk in their spirit, form, and delivery.

This is Nancy Kerr at her incomparable best; an album of extraordinary brilliance.

I was lucky enough to experience the live world premiere of Nancy Kerr taking this album on the road with a fine supporting band at the Met at Bury last night. Seeing her in concert was great, as she played every track off this new album (plus an assortment of other tracks) and gave the background context and her thinking behind each song. She has a strong clear distinct folky voice, you can clearly hear every word, with a great cast of strong supporting players including her regular partner James Fagan. Her songwriting is particularly strong, on this her long awaited solo debut album, with many having clear social messages, but done in a clever and subtle way. This is an excellent album that gets better with each play, there are lots of interesting nuances that reveal themselves with repeated listening. The songs are all new original compositions, most of them are quite upbeat and foot tapping, but they instantly sound as if they are long established traditional tunes. Every track is a gem, and the whole album is well produced and hangs together as one of the best contemporary folk albums of this year. My personal favourite track is "Now is the Time", a catchy thought provoking song excellently executed which is destined to become a concert favourite. I highly recommend this album and predict it will feature highly in many end of year lists for folk album of the year.

Music of strength, compassion, and utter beauty, and of kindness and love. Music to remind you why music matters: stunning, challenging, and uplifting. Took me two weeks to get past the first two tracks which are both more than superb. Has heart and has soul, lyrics to make you sit up and think, and singing from some rare and special place together with brilliant playing.

excellent song writing - need to listen many times to understand the depth of the lyrics that are woven into good melodies. The booklet of lyrics also makes good poetry.
