Product Description

Review

'Lilli returns to her childhood home to look after her dying mother. She soaks up her mother's memories of Somerset Marsh, inhales the smells of Supersoft hairspray, traces the picture of her errant father, and tries on her grandmother's wedding ring. Then she cycles off to meet Maurice, a freakish character who likes her to urinate on him. It's a shocking and intriguing opener.'Emma Jacobs, in the Financial Times, October 27 2007

Product Description

Lilli and Becca are childhood friends brought together amongst the evocative landscapes of the Somerset Levels. Separated, they become lost to one another as adults. Returning to the Marsh to care for her dying mother, Lilli begins to hear the echoes of other women's lives, stories that call to her from the ancient tracks beneath the once flooded land. Becca sings jazz in London's pubs and dreams of high tides and seafronts. She finds the way back in her songs but grows thin and pale on a diet of cigarettes and cocaine. Their parting continues to haunt them and Lilli and Becca's lives remain shrouded in betrayal and loss. As both women struggle to uncover the truth and resolve their troubled past, their paths converge, opening a new track - of friendship, reconciliation and hope.

3.0 out of 5 stars Melancholic but Enjoyable, 12 Nov 2007
By Ms. L. Bell (Durham) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A well written and slightly nostalgic novel , written by a novelist who would appear to have a mature and understanding view of human frailties as well as their strengths.
I found the novel reminiscent of Mary Wellesley's style, which would not necessarily be appreciated by the young and impetuous, but certainly has a connection for those who have experienced some of the more demanding aspects of life.
The novel does not "judge" the characters involved , or rely upon the readers sympathy for those less fortunate. It merely describes, and allows the reader's empathy to identify with or alienate the characters as they unfold.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book, 4 Dec 2007
By M. Joy - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book concerns the lives of people whose past haunts their present - the struggle to relieve the burden of their history is compellingly told.
A wider scope of human existence within a landscape is also expored; the main character feels a dim connection with lives previously lived within her locality - that of the Somerset levels, the watery marshes of Avalon and the Arthurian knights. The book is beautifully written and has a pace to it that forces the reader to continue to turn the pages. The book explores the human condition mainly through the lives of women but has a wider context that is resonant for all. Thoroughly recommended.
