More About the Author

Hi
My name is Colin Bell and I have written Sweet Talking. It is the tale of life in a fictitious sugar refinery in East London. The characters are made up as are the stories involving them. However there is an element of truth in each incident, more in some than others. The characters are composites of people I have known working in the sugar industry for twenty five years. At the time we all said someone should write a book, so eventually I did. There are one or two of the tales that are actually as they happened and those involved, if still around, may recognise themselves. Others have long since departed. The real fate of the factory I worked in was far too mundane to be of any use so it is obviously greatly embellished. People that have read it have voiced the opinion that they were sad when it was all over and would have liked to hear more of the characters, more stories and more background. In order not to disappoint I have written a sequel, a book in its own right, but one which also gives a personal history of the loveable rogues in Sweet Talking and brings them all together in a new setting. Beer Talking is now available on Kindle. I have also written a semi-autobiographical novella Past Talking which may appeal to those of you out there that grew up in the 70's. I hope you enjoy them.

A wonderful tale of the constant battle between Factory workers and their managers, over who actually had control of the plant. If you worked in a factory I'm sure you would have had characters like this where you worked and can relate to their escapades that are in this book. Some of these characters are very familiar to the Sugar factory that that I worked in near the Blackwall tunnel from the 70's through to it's closure. This book has made me laugh out loud as I relate these stories to true life experiences. The author has captured the spirit of the times well. Brilliant a must read.

Couldn't put this one down. Names weren't familiar but characters certainly were. Just like Only Fools and Horses where everyone remembers growing up with a Trigger and a Boycie, the boys at Global Molasses evoke memories of characters we all loved/hated or just simply reminded us of "old whatsisname". While this may not be one for the ladies, lads will roll up at lengths to which the ingenuity of working man is applied in the avoidance of work and the quest to put one over on management! Laugh a minute.

A hilarious read! The author's dry wit and ribald story telling had me crying with laughter page after page, I think we may have found a new Tom Sharpe! Sweet Talking perfectly evokes the excesses, contradictions and often outright lunacy of life in the 1970's with this colourful reminiscence about an era that many would rather forget! Shop floor union politics battles top floor management for control of the factory with every move undermined by a workforce intent on doing as little as possible for the maximum personal gain. The madcap antics of the characters would seem incredible, if they didn't ring so true as anybody that lived through this period will recognise. For all lovers of Carry On, Some Mother's Do Have `Em with a touch of Dad's Army thrown in...this is the book for you.
