5.0 out of 5 stars Great story that kept me gripped. 31 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was the first book I had read by this author and enjoyed the book so much I have since ordered a few more for my kindle. I felt that the story was not just the usual run of the mill woman meets man, and I really enjoyed how this small town all stood together to ensure the privacy of one of its residents.
I don't want to give the plot away but one of the main parts of this story was a health related issue and previously I had not thought about this so this was a great insight into how this procedure changes peoples lives and you can see how people fight for the right to have this.

The story was really interesting and had many twists and turns. I highly recommend this book and like myself you will be gripped.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another fab read from Barbara Delinsky 2 Aug 2013
By Sharon TOP 1000 REVIEWER
It's been ten years since Nicole and Charlotte have been together on Quinnipeague, an island off Maine, for Nicole's wedding to Julian which is strange since they were practically inseparable when they were younger. So what exactly happened to cause Charlotte to flee the island never to return?

Charlotte is now a freelance writer which sees her jetting all over the world for work and although she has an apartment in New York she's never really there long enough to make it feel like home. Meanwhile on paper it looks like Nicole has the perfect life, wife of eminent surgeon with no need to go out to work, but if it wasn't for her successful food blog she'd probably go a little crazy.

When Nicole is offered a book deal to write a cookbook based on local recipes from the island she decides to contact Charlotte to come and help her with interviews to include alongside the recipes. Charlotte agrees and shortly afterwards arrives back on the island.

Soon both women are immersed in the book and hope that working alongside each other will give them the chance to recapture the bond that they once had, and Nicole hopes for the support she needs at this time.

But it's clear from the start that there are many secrets being kept and slowly over time they are revealed but at what cost to their friendship...

Both Nicole and Charlotte were likeable characters which surprised me, I was expecting to like one more than the other but this was not the case at all. The islanders also made for some interesting characters but my favourite would definitely have to be reclusive Leo. Where can I meet my Leo?

4.0 out of 5 stars A warm, sweet, summery story 9 Aug 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Having never read a book by Barbara Delinsky fore, I didn't know what to expect. I must admit, I was very pleasantly surprised. This was a gorgeously written tale of female friendship, ups and downs of love and relationships and how a place can turn the clocks back.

The setting is so peaceful and idyllic, it made me fall in love and remember a summer I once spent with MY childhood best friend on an island similar to Quinn. The foodie aspect left me drooling and the recipes seriously caught my imagination. I loved the characters, they were warm and real and perfectly written. I cried more than once and devoured this book in one day.

I will be hunting for more of Delinsky's works now! A warm, sweet, summery story that gripped my heart! 4/5

NOT chick lit, well written, you feel part of the whole thing - I would strongly recommend this book. Was sad to leave the characters once I'd finished

2.0 out of 5 stars Did not do it for me 3 July 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I have just started to read Delinsky and enjoyed the two first books enormously.

However, "Sweet Salt Air" for some reason did not do it for me. It was very slow, almost standstill at times, and as much as I tried to involve myself in the story, I got bored. I also had the feeling that there would not be a totally clear ending for everyone involved. To some extent, yes, but as for MS and stem cell treatment, lots of questions were left unanswered. I hope this will not be a spoiler, since we all know that stem cell treatments are still fairly new in medicine, but I had still expected a more detailed summening up of the results for the patient here.

As for the growing of herbs on the island, I felt there was too much about this and only for those especially interested. The main protagonist is writing a cookbook, focusing a lot on the herbs, but the frequent and detailed information about their names and uses seemed to me perfect for a cookbook but too much for a novel of this kind.

I'm not stopping to read Delinsky because of this book. As I said, I loved the two first and have ordered more. But "Sweet Salt Air" was not my kind of thing.

This novel felt a little different from Barbara Delinsky's previous works, but in some ways it also felt very reminiscent of her earlier novels. The protagonists were a little younger than her usual heroines (normally married women with grown children) and the romantic element came more into the forefront than I'd come to expect from her. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy these aspects of the book, but it definitely deviated from her norm.

I loved the setting of a remote island in Maine. Delinsky has often written stunning descriptions of the scenery in New Hampshire, and here she gives the fiction island of Quinnipeague similar justice. I lived by the sea for the four years, and although I don't miss the crazy cold winds, I do miss the scent of the sea air, and this book brought back fond memories of life in St Andrews and Anstruther.

Charlotte and Nicole are brought together to write Nicole's cookbook about Quinnipeague food, and I absolutely loved the details about all the recipes they hunted down from locals, the mysterious herbs that grew on the island, and Nicole's own cooking experiments. Although I could barely boil an egg when I left home five years ago, I've grown to adore cooking and my husband and I have accidentally fallen into the role of food gurus at our church, so the world of food blogging is all too familiar for me. Delinsky certainly did her research in this area.

Delinsky often writes about issues and betrayals that tear families apart or bring them back together. The one in this novel wasn't the most original issue (although the details about Julian's MS and possible treatments were interesting) and I figured out Charlotte's secret just from reading the back cover. Perhaps I've just read too many Delinsky novels?
