Format: Audio CD
This beautiful album opens with the uptempo Six Blocks Away but soon turns sombre with songs like He Never Got Enough Love, the tender and poetic Sweet Old World (covered by Emmylou Harris on her Wrecking Ball album) and the painful Pineola, a harrowing story about a suicide and funeral. Little Angel, Little Brother is less sad, but gentle, perceptive and poetic too. The mood never seems to brighten after that, although Lines Around Your Eyes is a powerful love ballad and Prove My Love is a melodic, emotionally gripping country song. Sidewalks Of The City is a sad but hopeful Springsteenesque ballad, while Memphis Pearl reminds me of Emmylou's Red Dirt Girl or Joan Baez's version of Love Is Just A Four Letter Word in its theme and mood. Lucinda's sound is a perfect blend of rootsy country, folk and rock that fits her lyrics like a glove. This beautiful, sad and moving album ends, quite appropriately, with her cover of Nick Drake's elegiac Which Will.

Must disagree with the Amazon review this time - this is a classic, the peak of Lucinda's career so far and widely appreciated in the critical community. Little Angel, Little Brother is one of the most poignant songs you'll ever hear and the title track is a beautifully haunting melody.
If you're in tune with Country/Folk music and considering a purchase, hesitate no longer - you need this album.

Buy this album if only for one track: Sweet Old World. About losing a loved one, presumably to suicide, but not necessarily limited to that, it is almost too sad for words. Its ability to capture musically the ethereal, confused, and single-minded detachment from the world we can feel shortly after losing someone dearest is a mark of great musicianship.

But where it is so utterly successful is in realising a lyrical ambition of not expecting the listener to indulge the singer, to share their burden of grief, to help them through the night as it were, which is so often the object of even a great ballad. Instead she simply draws you in gently, unassumingly, until you realise your very own experiences of profound loss could be - are - being described.

Covered masterfully elsewhere by Emmylou Harris with the help of Daniel Lanois, this is an unusually brilliant song. Sung as it is here by its own author, it cannot be bettered as one of the greatest country ballads ever made.

I absolutely love this album. Her best in a long time. If you are inclined to like her and are unsure whether to buy I would urge you to get this without hesitation.
