3.0 out of 5 stars nice music, bad production? 6 May 2005
Format:Audio CD
The music is mostly excellent, Henderson and Hubbard in great form as usual. The annoying thing (on my copy anyway) is what sounds like scratches (like on a worn LP) on many of the tunes. 5 stars for the music, 1 for production (something to do with the copy control? I've heard of similar problems with other recent Blue Notes).

5.0 out of 5 stars IN RARE FORM 26 Mar 2007
By Brian D. Fitzpatrick - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
PERSONNEL:
Freddie Hubbard-trumpet
Joe Henderson-tenor sax
James Spaulding-alto sax,flute
Duke Pearson-piano
Ron Carter-bass
Mikey Rocker-drums

Well-known for his superlative arranging skills for big band as well as smaller ensembles, and as a solid main-stream pianist, this recording is a
good testimonial to all of these attributes.I consider SWEET HONEY BEE to be the finest recording during his tenure at BLUE NOTE RECORDS.This sextet is polished, with some great originals by Pearson,top-shelf soloing all around, and a really superb rhythm section, with Freddie Hubbard,James Spaulding, and Joe Henderson taking full advantage of the moment.Standouts for me were the surreal qualities of 'GAS LIGHT',which merits a thoughtful and hi-calibre solo by Henderson, and the straight ahead 'one-two punch' of 'BIG BERTHA'.Hubbard,Spaulding and Henderson really 'smoke'this one, with the sparkling drive of Roker,Carter, and Duke spurring them on.On both these tunes Pearson really diplays his remarkable compositional and arranging skills. This comes highly reccomended. Also, two other suberb CD's with Duke Pearson as leader, are 'THE DUKE PEARSON BIG BAND' (Blue Note Records),and 'PROFILE'(with Stanley Turrentine/Blue Note Records).Enjoy! Health and happiness.

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm really diggin' this 14 April 2004

A review I read (not here) bad-mouthed this, but I got a chance to hear it and my ears loved it. Far from a "blowing session," these tunes represent Pearson's compositional and arranging skills, and incorporate tasty solos without abandoning melody and form. A very cool 60s groove.

5.0 out of 5 stars sweet indeed. 18 Sep 2004
By Cedric Westphal - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
this is my favorite duke pearson cd. It is not as much jazzy as it is loungy (there is less room for soloing, even though the cast is a-list, a big chunk of it is orchestrated), and it definitely has an easy listening quality to it, but once it is on, I can't help but play it again and again.
5.0 out of 5 stars an album you just gotta hear ! 27 Dec 2012

Duke Pearson - Sweet Honey Bee

I first heard Duke Pearson on an early Byrd album and remember saying how amazed I was by his piano player......huge creativity and Duke really stood out for me. I remember thinking that I need to pick up more by this guy somewhere down the road........
...well I guess Sweet Honey Bee was my selection...and a very good one at that.

Sweet Honey Bee is a very light happy little jazz album that EVERYONE will love.......this is exactly what I thought i'd get from a Duke album...something very creative and very noticeable....in fact I played this last night during a dinner party Sharon and I hosted with some friends and someone at the dinner table said "they love this music" and asked who it was....

Sweet Honey Bee is a FUN little album that is very light yet very sophisticated and very well put together. I would say that this might just be the perfect lite Jazz album you can pick up and play for your friends.
Highly recommended jazz album !
5.0 out of 5 stars Have the Original Vinyl! 21 Sep 2012

Purchased the original at the release date, can't remember when, but just heard track from it on the radio, and remembered, this is one of my favorite albums of all time.
I don't play vinyl anymore, sadly, can't afford, and don't have room and facilities for turntable. But I do have hundreds of CD's, and of course, hundreds of vinyls duplicated with the CD's, I know, sad.But Duke has always been in my top ten list of musicians, forever. Sweet Honey Bee, I believe is a classic and will forever reign has one Duke's best efforts.
