When New York fashion designer Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon) becomes engaged to the city's most eligible bachelor, she neglects to tell him she is still married to her high-school sweetheart Jake (Josh Lucas), who refuses to divorce her. However, when she returns to Alabama to try to sort things out, the old feelings start creeping in.
From the Back Cover
In this delightful romantic comedy, Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde) stars as sophisticated Melanie Carmichael, a rising New York fashion designer who suddenly finds herself engaged to the citys most eligible bachelor. But this is no fairy tale romance for Melanie. She has a secret past that includes Jake (Josh Lucas, A Beautiful Mind), the backwoods husband she married in high school, who refuses to divorce her. Determined to end their marriage and sever all ties with her past once and for all, Melanie returns to Alabama. But home starts to tug at her heartstrings, and what she thought she wanted may not be what she wants at all.

Cue the comedy as Mel returns to the small town in Alabama in order to get her ex to sign divorce papers. No longer part of the small community she left, the community that knew her as 'Felony Melanie', Mel finds herself somewhat out on a limb. To make matters worse, her ex husband Josh is still smarting at the way Melanie left him and he is not going to make a divorce easy. If that doesn't make the road to wedded bliss difficult enough, Mel's future mother-in-law is decidedly unhappy with her son's choice of bride and is determined to put a spoke in the wheel. This isn't just a lightweight comedy however; there are some very poignant moments, particularly when Mel has to evaluate the person she has become and face the fact she may not like that person.
The DVD has a few extras such as deleted scenes, alternative ending, audio commentary and a music video, and the quality of picture and sound are as good as you would expect from the format. This is an enjoyable, heart warming, funny film that is well worth a look.
Several years ago, the female lead in this film might have been given to an adorably tousled Meg Ryan, but, alas, none of us are as young as we used to be. So, Reese Witherspoon plays Melanie, the up and coming New York fashion designer who's won the heart of the Mayor's son, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey). And what a Hunk Andy is! Not only is he reminiscent of JFK, Jr., but he proposes to Melanie by escorting her into Tiffany's after-hours and inviting her to pick out the engagement ring of her choice. What's a poor girl to do but say "yes"? But, before the nuptials, she must go back home to Alabama to take care of some private business, which is get divorce papers signed by her childhood sweetheart and secret husband Jake (Josh Lucas), long since estranged.
Reese is sweet - a worthy successor to MR. And Lucas has that roguish handsomeness and attitude of, say, Matthew McConaughey or a very young Paul Newman. As a matter of fact, the only thing wrong with Jake, according to the scriptwriters, is that he hasn't any prospects, lives with his coon dog in backwater Alabama, plays pool with his good ol' boy buds on Saturday night, was too drunk to dance with Melanie at their wedding reception, and, well, isn't Andrew.
Perhaps the best reason to see SWEET HOME ALABAMA is Candice Bergen as Kate, the Big Apple's mayor and Andrew's mother. Kate sees her son as Presidential material, so appearances are everything. She's horrified that he might actually (gulp!) marry someone so plebeian as a fashion designer.Read more ›
This is one of the best romantic comedies out there in my opinion and well worth a watch even if you aren't usually a fan of such films. With preformances by Reece Witherspoon there isn't much that you can dislike about Sweet Home Alabama. And for you girls - Josh Lucas does take his shirt off! So even if you don't like romantic comedies - Josh Lucas takes his shirt off and plays one of the most loveable blokes I have ever witnessed. Apart from that - it is a really good movie which brought a tear of happiness to my eyes at least.
It really is such a lovely movie and quite beautiful too. With such great acting talents that are truly convincing to you. I just cannot get this movie out of my head, it was so sweet. If you do like romantic comedies this is well worth a buy, if you're not so keen you should see it anyway and then you'd want to buy it. It's that good.
This is a easy to watch romantic comedy, with a brilliant (as usual) performance from the lovley Reese Witherspoon, and an easy to get into storyline.
This is a romantic comedy that is suitable for the whole family to watch together without cringing- (as i did at certain parts of 'Love Actually', which i made the mistake of watching with my parents at 15!)
Full of humour, romance, and being stuck in the middle of two husbands, Teens will love it, but it is easily sophisticated enough for any adult to enjoy too!
I would thoroughly recommend this. Over the years I have watched this many times and continue to enjoy it. Even my boyfriend, who usually prefers action films has been known to watch and enjoy this (although he wouldn't ever say so!!!)
