This double album contains over two hours of fine New Orleans music recorded 'live' in Minneapolis in 1964. This 'Preservation Hall' group was lead by Emma Barrett and, as they had known each other and played together for years, produce a fine ensemble sound. In the best New Orleans tradition, nobody tries to outplay anyone else and the result is an extremely enjoyable album of traditional jazz at its best.

The front line blend beautifully in ensemble and all contribute good solos. Percy Humphrey on trumpet plays a fine lead and his solo and vocal contributions are never less than enjoyable. Jim Robinson on trombone contributes great tailgate to the ensembles and his rugged solos are very rewarding. Willie Humphrey's clarinet is consistently stimulating and his solos are fine examples of New Orleans clarinet at its best.

The rhythm section develop a wonderful relaxed swing. 'Slow Drag' Pavageau's bass is outstanding and Emanuel Sayles' banjo is quite delightful - his solos are very original and his rhythmic drive very subtle. 'Cie' Frazier is a fine New Orleans drummer although, for this listener, his solos are, perhaps, too extensive.

Emma Barrett plays wonderful piano. She is rhythmic rather than virtuosic but adds greatly to the ensemble sound and her solos are very enjoyable. Her vocals, in the vaudeville tradition, are delightful - especially on 'Bill Bailey', 'Closer Walk' and 'I'm alone because I love you'.

The tunes, a mixture of pop songs and New Orleans classics, are well chosen and even the obligatory 'Saints' performed in such an original manner as to be very enjoyable.

The sound quality is excellent but the recording balance just a bit hit and miss. However, this slight blemish does very little to lessen the pleasure this fine album will give to all lovers of New Orleans music. Highly recommended.

The first, and one of the best from The Preservation. Although in truth, Ive bought about four of their cuts and they are all excellent. If you like jazz you'll love this one.

HASH(0x973fa6cc) out of 5 stars Preservation Hall Jazz at its best 9 Nov. 2006

Very good listening. Traditional jazz at its best. The variety and scope of Miss Emma's jazz provides lively entertainment. Besides some of the traditional favorites the 2CD set includes several delightful renditions of old-time hymn tunes. As a lay minister I often use music for a time of reflection right after my message. A couple of times, while conducting worship at a nursing home I used the hymns for the musical interlude. A delighted,toe-tapping response ensued.

HASH(0x973fa918) out of 5 stars authentic N'awlins 16 Dec. 2009

I first bought this recording as an LP more than 20 years ago in the doorway of Preservation Hall. At that time the last of the older men were still playing in the Hall, and the back and forth between the players and the audience is captured in the spirit of this recording. Lovely, lovely thing.

HASH(0x973fabd0) out of 5 stars Sweet Emma Barrett 20 Sept. 2010

This 2 disc CD is really good value. 25 tracks re-mastered from original sources recorded in 1964. Sweet Emma Barrett singing on six tracks and various members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band singing on seven more sides. A good example of Preservation Hall jazz from the mid-sixties. Well worth buying.

HASH(0x973fab4c) out of 5 stars Fantastic Jazz CD for all occasions and all listeners 5 Oct. 2013
By Redcap - Published on Amazon.com

I happened to stumble on this CD in a used record shop. It's really an infectious CD remastered from a 1964 live recording. I can't imagine anybody being disappointed with this CD. Various family and friends have enjoyed the CD, young to old, including those who usually have a very limited range of music (like listening to radio only). The album maintains a very clear recording, and preserves a very genuine, live jazz hall sound that remains very close and intimate. The live recording intermixes instrumentals with vocals throughout a single performance and keeps a strong, upbeat pace throughout both CDs. Presently, I don't see any sound clips for this album, but it's in a New Orleans/Roaring 20's/30's sound, so find other albums to ensure you're into this style of Jazz. Then come back and buy this one, it's fantastic! Many thanks to Allan and Benjamin Jaffe for working towards reissuing this album.
