Don't get me wrong: I love Sweet Charity. Even though the film is a little baggy in places, MacLaine and co are a joy, the music is magnificent and the orchestration quite exhilarating. Not that you'd know from this recording. It reminded me of when I was a kid and used to record Top of the Pops off the TV by holding my tape recorder in front of it. The quality of the sound is horrible, tinny and lacking real depth. Also, the pickings are very slim with only 40 mins of music (the film is 150 mins long and there is a lot of music in it!). In a way I'm grateful that this CD exists, but the meanness of the CD publisher is unforgivable.

While admittedly I don't own the CD of this product (I own the vinyl copy...in fact, two copies as one is a gatefold cover), I have to redress the balance in favour of this Shirley Maclaine-led soundtrack here in comparison to the Gwen Vernon one mentioned elsewhere on this page.
Certainly It must have been wonderful to see Gwen and by all accounts the soundtrack recording she is a part of does that performance justice.
Also I can accept that the quality of the sound recording on this Shirley Maclaine soundtrack lacks depth. In fact, it sounds just like it would have been recorded....that is, in a large room, drum kit at the back of the orchestra, and the vocalists overdubbed for the movie.
But I am very fond of it. Have been since a small child. The orchestrations are achingly beautiful in places, then sparkling here and wonderfully robust there. The performances of Shirley are particularly poignant (I've listened to the Gwen Vernon equivalents on Spotify and I feel she lacks the humanity of Maclaine....especially 'Where Am I Going?' where the latter sings and really puts her heart into the lines).
The ballroom girls, Stubby Kaye and Sammy Davis Jnr are all great.

What I particularly love about this soundtrack is how it manages to change weather between humour and heartache in no time.
Perhaps I am overly sentimental for something that, in other people's ears, was badly recorded and outshone by other performers on the stage version. Newcomers to the recording may not so enthused as I am.
But I know which I would prefer between Maclaine and Vernon...and amid such criticism elsewhere on this page, I had to speak for those who may agree with me!!

At last, this long-missed soundtrack can be heard. After a long time of orchestral and stage versions, the original sounds of the beloved film can be enjoyed. If you like the film, you will surely love this CD. Yet, I would like to add that the absense of the "rich man's frug" dancing sequence is a serious drawback.

Great soundtrack and film, a tad expensive though on c.d. Listen to it as a whole, ideally watch the film beforehand - omwe.
