The sexy Juliet Prowse (of the Las Vegas production, film Can-Can, etc)shines as Charity Hope Valentine and is bolstered by Paula Kelly (of the film version) in this 1967 UK editon of the great prolific playwright Neil Simon, versatile composer Cy Coleman and master lyricist Dorothy Fields' musical Sweet Charity (which is based on Federico Fellini's 1957 film the Nights of Cabiria)with slightly different orchestrations by the great Ralph Burns. No one can possibly touch the performance of the original Charity, the late great Gwen Verdon, but the late Miss Prowse is no less entertaining! Gwen Verdon wasn't a particularly great singer, but she did possess a certain giggle in her voice and an undeniable charm that won over all of Broadway! Prowse was a flawless dancer and delightfully disarms with her characterization and surprising vocal ability; a much better Charity in terms of both singing and dancing than film Charity, Shirley MacLaine. Variations also include the banter between Kelly and Josephine Blake in "There's Gotta Be Somthing Better Than This". Note the Brits have trouble mastering the American dialects in "Rhythm Of Life". Rod McLennan is as good as original John McMartin and John Kelly is wonderous as Vittorio in "Too Many Tomorrows". This is when musicals were great! Try and get a copy!
