PLOT SUMMARY: Drifter Chance Wayne returns to his hometown after many years of trying to make it in the movies. With him is a faded film star he picked up along the way, Alexandra Del Lago. While trying to get her help to make a screen test, he also finds the time to meet his former girlfriend Heavenly, the daughter of the local politician Tom 'Boss' Finley, who more or less forced him to leave the town many years ago. ABOUT THE DVD: This is a release by LIVING COLOUR ENTERTAINMENT (part of their 'Classic Cinema Collection') for the NETHERLANDS market (Region 2 PAL format, which is the same as in the UK, so it will play without problems on all standard DVD players in the UK and the rest of Western Europe). The descriptive text on the rear of the packaging is in Dutch and French. AUDIO is the original ENGLISH language (with French and Italian dubbed options on the disc too). SUBTITLES are available in English, Dutch, French, Italian, Romanian and Arabic, and there are also 'hard-of-hearing' subtitles for English and Italian. The film is presented in COLOUR and in WIDESCREEN format and runs for 115 minutes. All menus on the DVD are in English, extras on the disc include a 12 minute 'making of' documentary 'Sweet Bird Of Youth: Chasing Time', Rip Torn and Geraldine Page Screen Tests, the film's original theatrical trailer and there's a Scene Selection menu too.

Mr. Williams is a master at exposing the cancer at the heart of America, and his use of the word "mendacity" says it all.

The film is dominated by the star performance from Geraldine Page, but anyone who thought Paul Newman was just a good face will be amazed at the nuanced performance he gives here. He was a marvellous cinema actor, and a great Williams leading man

I had just forgotten what an incredible playwright Tennessee William is. Also just how enigmatic Paul Newman is. In South Africa eurocentric writing no longer seems to have a place. We seem to be in the process of closing down bookshops. So watching this old film was like a breath of fresh air.

It may not be top draw Tennessee Williams but interesting nonetheless especially to compare to the current stage production at the Old Vic.

Anyone producing a play or film must, presumably at some point, adhere to the playwrights directions

Each and every production of Mr Williams plays has fallen at the first fence. ok for a Paul Newman star vehicle etc but Mr Williams states that the Character is about 25 years old and has 'noticably thinning hair' - hence the fleeting bird of youth referenced in the Hart Crane poems that Mr Williams was so fond of
