A great DVD, closer to the original story than Mr. Depps offering with far better characters and a superb performance from Ray Winston. I first saw this on TV and had to have a copy. Highly recommended. Meat Pies may never be the same again!

Another telling of the famous story. Ray Winstone plays Sweeney Todd, a man rebuilding his life after serving a lengthly prison sentence for a crime carried out by his father (his younger brother was hanged for the same).

Now the owner of a respectable barbers, his inner demons are put to test when a Newgate Prison Gaoler comes in for a shave boasting how he mistreats children in the prison, and thus becomes Sweeney Todd's first victim. Worse follows, a short time later his father reappears demanding money on a regular basis. At this point it is easy to see Todd as a victim, as he saves the life of a local constable, gives money to the prison children and buys a pie shop for a girl he befriends.

However her regular flow of lovers soon regret their actions as they enter Todd's shop for a shave and finish up as pie fillers. His customers now disappear with alarming regularity and the Bow Street Runners are investigating.

As with all great films, time seems to fly past. Ray Winstone gives one of his greatest performances in this graphic adaptation.

Ray Winstone at his best yet again, a faultless portrayal of the Demon Barber, BUT my one crititism and the reason that I bought the dvd was the Directors Cut description. However, The Directors Cut is EXACTLY as the transmitted version and I feel cheated. so if you saw the TV edition then the Directors Cut just does not deliver, there are NO extras what so ever, but if you like Ray Winstone as I do then buy it.

Ray Winstone does another wonderful job at taking you into the life of his character. Set in 18th century London Sweeny Todd is a respected Barber, but little do the people around him know the real Mr Todd. The relationship that Todd forms with Mrs Lovett proves to be symbiotic. The constant need both Todd and Lovett rely upon, pulls them to their demise.

"Sweeney Todd: The Director's Cut," a 2006 television production of the classic horror story for the British Broadcasting Corporation, reached these shores as a DVD in 2007. It stars Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast , Beowulf - 1 Disc Edition), in the title role; was written by Joshua St. Johnston and directed by David Moore. As a director's cut, it includes footage not seen in the broadcast - beware, sensitive souls, it's intensely violent. It also boasts a Sweeney Todd background essay, cast filmographies, and, thank goodness, at least in the Acorn release, unadvertised closed captioning: characters in this movie are doing their best to speak early London English. The movie is set in eighteenth century London, where the first, Victorian treatment of this famous horror tale placed it; it runs about an hour and a half.

The award-winning Winstone, who is of cockney origins himself, and a former boxer, succeeds in making the demon barber of Fleet Street a believable human being. Essie Davis (Girl With A Pearl Earring), makes Mrs. Lovett into a lusty young woman, more sinned-against than sinning. And the veteran David Warner (Titanic, Tom Jones (1963)), makes his blind police chief Fielding quite credible, and moving.

This film was made for Television. Anyone that didn't see it have missed a treat. I got in a debate with a friend who loves the Jonny Depp made for the big screen version. He said no-way could this be better. being a big Jonny Depp and RaY Winstone fan and a fan of both films I don't think their is any contest. This is definetly superior, I ordered this for my friend to watch. He now agrees with me, this is a great film. Ray Winstone takes you back in time his acting is superb.I may be wrong but it looks by his acting he loved this part and is at his best.
Do yourselves a favour and buy it.

Ray Winston played and portraid Sweeney Tod's charactor so well, i actually sympathysed with the charactor he portrayed, and what made him the monster he became, prob all down to the good acting of Ray Winston.
the settings, the actors, all put together so well, i would highly recommend this film to anyone but the faint hearted, but even the gore was done quite tactfully, not too much, concentrating more on the events and emotions of the charactors. obviously a lot of work went into the background of the story. highly recommended.
