Another Christmas, another boxset,

This review is from: The Sweeney - The Complete Series 4 [1975] [DVD] (DVD)
Tucked away in this final set is my favourite Sweeney episode "Hard Men", in which a Scottish detective "liases" with the Met to foil a kidnap plot. An hour of brilliance in the writing and acting department. Nowadays, British drama consists of endless serial killers with preposterous habits and cardboard characters leaning over mortuary tables babbling about forensics in weird colour filters. It's all terribly dreary.

This review is from: The Sweeney - The Complete Series 4 [1975] [DVD] (DVD)
This last series of the Sweeney showed that the vastly popular and well acted drama had come to a logical conclusion. The episodes are a real mixed bag - some brilliant and some leaving you thinking why the writer allowed the plot to develop along those lines. The Acting is as ever superb, with the double act of Thaw and Waterman being really comfy with each other by this time.Regan develops into an even harder drinking, harder smoking character who seems to get his leg over more in this final series, but remarks to George that "I am getting too old for this caper - I smoke too much, I drink too much..." This is a series for real Sweeney fans like me, but is not by any means the best of the bunch. There is also an appearance by Morcombe and Wise (I am not a fan), but this somehow seems out of place, as if we are sharing an in-house Euston films joke that we don't quite understand. There are good interviews and special features and the restoration of the original 16mm film is as in the previous sets absolutely superb. In summary, if you love the Sweeney, you will love this. If this is your first Sweeney purchase then I suggest you start with an earlier series, preferably in chronological order to get the best effect.

This review is from: The Sweeney - The Complete Series 4 [1975] [DVD] (DVD)
The fourth and final series of The Sweeney was (in my opinion) the weakest (save for a few real gems 'Messenger of the Gods', 'Drag Act', 'One of Your Own' and, of course, Regan's closing comments to Haskins in 'Jack or Knave') but I put this down to the story lines rather than the actors - all on top form as usual. As far as this DVD set goes, Network has definitely saved the best until last. Various John Thaw and Dennis Waterman interviews accompany the regular 'Annual' feature in PDF format as well as pre-programme introductions by a selection of the guest actors. A fantastic 'Out Takes' and 'Making of Hearts and Minds' PDF feature, not to mention the now expected crystal clear picture and sound quality and music only track complete a highly polished box set. In short; congratulations to Network for providing us with the complete 'The Sweeney' - long overdue but well worth the wait, and well done to everyone involved in 'The Sweeney' for providing us with some of the finest television ever produced. 5 stars.
