5.0 out of 5 stars A work of art, 14 Jul 2007
I hesitated before buying this because lets face it, you can spend a lot of time staring at your tv so its important to get it right. I have never been so impressed with a piece of technology as i am with the swedx tv. The picture quality is superb and apart from blending in with the furniture and being pleasing to the eye, I have been asked so many questions about it! This tv doubles up as a monitor so the hubby can plug in his laptop or the kids can use it for wii. I strongly recommend this product as it looks amazing in real life!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous looking product but poor customer service from Swedx, 2 Dec 2007
By Neil Patterson - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Ok lets get the positives out first. This Swedx television is indeed a very good looking piece of furniture/technology. I have a 40inch beech full HD model. On the surface it is well finished and looks to my eyes, so much better than all the other black and silver television's around at the moment that it's almost a crime. The picture from the Samsung panel on a decent signal is very sharp clean and detailed and indeed you would probably buy it in a showroom on it's picture performance only. The inputs and outputs are varied and make hookup fairly straightforward with the majority of bits and bobs I own. Like a fair few of television's though the inputs can be very difficult to get to so bear this in mind (the manual suggests you hook up the television before you hang it on the wall). The negatives of my experience with this television though and latterly with the company are many, frustrating and varied. I must make it clear that I bought my model direct from the manufacturers as I was working in France and this seemed to me to be the easiest way at the time. WRONG!! The television arrived quickly but with many problems which did not make themselves known on my initial inspection. If like me you can't wait to get technology plugged in and working take my advice. Check this television over and over and over again if you do decide to get one. I guess I may as well say right now if I had my time over again given my experience's I would not. I would get something else, something bland and utilitarian and safe. I thought that the television had a grain fault near the joints when I first checked it over and as such I thought to myself "hey it's wood it will be a little imperfect". How wrong I was. It was split. What with all the other faults the television manifested in time, reluctantly, I decided to send it back. Now a few weeks later when I checked the television (I had to entrust it to the couriers and so I REALLY checked it this time to ensure and be able to prove that any further damage had nothing to do with me, I took pictures too just in case) again I found it wasn't a grain fault it was a split in the frame. The split or should I say splits (yes in fact there were two) were right along the join and during the weeks had finally proudly revealed themselves in their full stomach churning glory. A plastic frame will probably still hold itself together if split and hung on a wall. A wooden frame if split at a joint and hung will get progressively worse (think rickety chair if you will) given seasonal change in the weather and central heating etc the reality is wood can be problematical. Now I think it's time for my credentials. I have worked in retail both as a salesman, within mail order and as a shop manager and customer service manager. This is pertinent because the company adamantly believe the television to have been damaged by the courier company and stuck steadfastly and resolutely to this single idea. Hmmm. The box arrived in good condition with no evidence of damage or the usual tell tale signs that a box has been treated roughly. I have received deliveries at work in the past and the wonderful varied and unrelenting punishment the couriers have meted out to defenseless objects of desire have brought a tear to my eye! Also the tube showed obvious banding and uneven lighting which again was claimed to be due to the television being dropped. Given my experience in retail I think differently. It's a bit like those multiple choice answers from one to five. I would have to tick number five I strongly disagree. Swedx said the base showed signs of damage when they received it back. It did not. I know I checked it, thoroughly. Remember if you succumb to buying one check and check and check.......oh and check again. Other faults. The television needed a firmware upgrade which meant receiving through the post a lead. Then you had to plug it into a computer and.........I don't know the rest because I didn't do it!! Firmware upgrades are usually done by engineers. Usually. If something goes wrong you void your warranty and you have an expensive doorstop/paperweight or whatever. Picture response time was poor. What I mean by this is I could clearly see the picture 'flashing' as the scene moved from a dark one to one with more light. One of the scarts doesn't seat properly. It's too far into the cabinet. If you use a standard Scart because the sockets are upside down then gravity will make the cable fall out unless you have a particularly grippy cable. It's rather hit or miss with computers. You have to muck about with the cable plugging it in and out and other various tricks to get it to recognise the computer. If the tele powers off or the computer sleeps you may, and probably will, lose the picture altogether (plug the cable in plug the cable out you do the hokey cokey........) You get to improve your Swedish though, the television thoughtfully sends you a message........Unsupporte I guess means unsupported huh?
The upshot of it is that I wrote many many emails and eventually (I was initially told to pay for a new cabinet myself!!!!) got the television cabinet repaired. The firmware upgrade was done also without me having to be involved (computers indeed, they drive me crazy at the best of times) The banding is still present and unacceptable as is the issue with the Scart. When I sent the television back I had to pay for it to be picked up and returned (not cheap to Sweden). Swedx do state that this is so, that the customer has to pay, but I would say that is only if the product that you send out is up to scratch. Send out something that is possibly more fragile than the box you send it out in and as a customer I reserve the right to not pay or at least give you an extremely hard time which is what I did. So to sum up a nice looking television but for me not worth the hassle. I was going to buy some of their other products but I think I will heed the observation of a colleague. He came around specially to view the television and went away thinking seriously about buying one. When he heard the facts of my dealings with Swedx he decided in a moment " I'm not buying one no way". Over to you dear customer.

Just a brief footnote. I did email Swedx and give them the opportunity to read this review before I posted it. Suffice to say their response was mainly limited to what they had said before and also they sent me a simple line drawing of how they believed the television fell during transportation. Basically they believed it toppled over and hence the damage. Well if the customer is always right (and I believe they are because you cannot fight negative publicity) I stick to my appraisal that the packaging is in no way up to the job, a fact that they are already aware of. Why else would they send the television with an extra big piece of hardboard stuck to one side of the cardboard box (which is how they sent it the very first time I received it)?

QUICK UPDATE APRIL 2008. TV now has another fault (!!!!) which is very serious. Switches to black on all inputs sproradically and has to be rebooted constantly. Not sure why but it's the final nail in the coffin. Can't face sending it back again although I have inquired, the service is just too po-faced and inflexible (I think I shouldn't pay for it to go back as this is an escalation of a previously mentioned fault. Their policy, Swedx, is they think I should pay. I will be getting rid of it and getting something that works instead. At least I should be able to burn the majority of it!!! Oh and I now would give it and the company one star. The star is just for the looks.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Swede you can depend on... unlike Sven...., 2 Aug 2007

I originally debated over a 42" Sony or this 40" Swedx. Being a lesser known brand I was unsure wether to invest a large chunk of money on a smaller sized TV made by a lesser known brand. I decided to go for the Swedx, after being particuarly struck by the look, and am very pleased I did. The aesthetically unique look looks even more imppresive in real life. The picture quality is suberb, the slimlline design is excellent, and the extras such as freeview and the free wall brackets make this purchase complete. The only negative, and the reason a star is lost, is due to the lip sync being slitghtly out on certain channels. However overall I highly recommnend.

The TV is great, but not free of problems. Having read Mr Paterson's review, I would never buy a TV from Sweden to be used in the UK. Read more
