Recently, a large number of vocabulary books by A Taranov have appeared on the market. While the idea is good, I'm afraid that the execution is poor. I became suspicious when seeing that the same person had written identical books for 30-40 different languages. The impression is that the author has compiled automatic lists for numerous languages without even speaking the languages in question. Certainly not at the level required to capture different nuances.

In this book, around 90% of the words are correct. 10% are completely wrong, which is quite close to the ration of Google translate. The pronunciation is way off, often very wrong.

Do yourself a favour a buy a proper book written by linguists who speak the two languages that the book consists of. That will save you from the sometimes hilarious mistakes in Taranov's books.

I have been looking for a good vocabulary of the Swedish language for at least 15 years and the best I have been able to come across is one with 5000 words, but this with 9000 words is the right one for a substantial number of words. ... and now I see that I can have similar books for the other languages that I like: Dutch, German and so on ...

Yours sincerelly

I bought this thinking it could be helpful to me. But believe me, you are better off using translate.google.com or if you are traveling, just get a dictionary. This book has NO EXAMPLES of how to use these words.

Quality Control 21 Jun. 2013

I wanted to learn many new Swedish words, but many of the entries are wrong in this book, or highly unusual/unused words. The pronunciation is equally off. I guess maybe 90-95% of the book is correct, but as a learner you don't know which 5-10% of the words that is wrong. I would suggest using the free list of the most common Swedish words instead. The list is from the KELLY project at Göteborgs Språkbank. Would do that if I could do it again and save $18.

Almost all the words are wrong! (Swedish is my first language) 25 Oct. 2014
By Gwilym - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
As a native Swedish speaker, I have to point out that pronunciation for almost every word in this book is wrong! It always mixes together "y" and "u", two very different sounds in Swedish and while it pretend to tell if vowels are long or short, it's wrong at least 3 times out of 5, which almost always changes the meaning (as an example, it gives 'glas' (glass) the short vowel of 'glass' (icecream).

As in all other books in this series, the book seems to have been compiled automatically by people who do not speak Swedish. If you use this book, we Swedes won't understand you. I can only assume that the reviewers who gave good reviews are beginners who are unaware that the words they are learning are far too often wrong. It's a honest mistake, but one I hope nobody else will have to make.

an unusual way to learn vocabulary 29 Mar. 2013

You need to look at this as it prints out on the Kindle---weird. The words are cut into pieces which are not proper syllables, making them difficult to read. The format really needs to be changed. I can't use it the way it is. Let me know when it is revised and I'll take another look. Still waiting for someone to come out with a good SWEDISH-ENGLISH (in that order) dictionary that will interact with the Kindle the way Victor Saase' ENGLISH-SWEDISH READER'S DICTIONARY does. My Swedish cousin loves it. I would like to love its counterpart if there was one.
