Probaly the most famous track is the final track, 'Midsommarvaka', which recreates the moods of Swedish Midsummer Eve celebrations - dancing - maypole games and frolics. Personally it reminds me of my daughter as a tiny tot dressing up and really enjoying dancing. Sometimes known as the Swedish Rhapsody it is lively and at times merry. There is a whole range of other feelings visited on this CD. There are two powerful short and serious pieces - Interlude from the Cantata 'The Song' by Wilhelm Stenhammar and Elegy from Gustavus Adolphus II Suite by Alfven. From Peterson-Berger comes an aftertaste of Grieg - 'Four Pieces from Frosoblomster'. Lars-Erik Larrson gives a lyrical Swedish view in his Pastoral Suite. I also like the chirpy March from the Serenade for Strings by Dag Wiren which was used at one time in the sixties for the television arts series known as 'Monitor'. The Helsinborg Symphony Orchestra and Okko Kamu seem to enjoy themselves -altogether a delightful introduction to Swedish Classical music.

This CD has very pleasant music of a sound quality that is as good as we expect
from Naxos. The item was dispatched in a lightweight Jiffy-bag and the case was quite
scratched. However the contents - booklet and CD - were fine and we have spare gemcases.

I bought this CD, together with volume 2, for my wife who is Swedish. She sings with a choral society and was brought up with classical music as her father is a composer and conductor in Sweden. This is an excellent CD of Swedish orchestral music at its best and is very relaxing and enjoyable to listen to..

One of the gems of Naxos catalog 19 Jan. 1999
By aaronshu@hotmail.com - Published on Amazon.com

This disc was a bestseller in Sweden and really should be one here too. The music itself is undemanding and light but sincere and tuneful. It will not impress you with epic grandor but will surely make you feel a lot better at the end of bad day. The performance is also idiomatic and distinguished. The sound is warm and spacious.

Delightful and diverting 3 April 2008

The Orchestral Favourites series are compilations of shorter suites, serenates, cantatas, and selected works of various composers of "lighter" classical music. All of the pieces on this disc are quite enjoyable--sort of a classical "easy listening", and I mean no insult by that term.

FUN and MELODIC! A real musical adventure!!! 6 Jun. 2013
By Anthony Wages - Published on Amazon.com

I had only heard the symphony and serenade by Stenhammer before I bought this CD. This was a fantastic purchase - every track is filled with joyous melodies and bouncy rhythms. If you like to sit back and simply ENJOY good music, this is the cd for you. After 3 listens, my personal favorites are Lars-Erik Larsson ( Pastoral Suite ) and Hugo Alfven ( Midsummer Vigil ).

It is rare to discover an entire CD filled with excellent music, each track a joyous listening pleasure. I would think this is a perfect CD for a road trip too. I am now determined to buy the symphonies of both Larsson and Alfven. THANK YOU NAXOS - excellent sound quality, recording quality and first rate musicians bring this music alive.

BUT THIS CD WITHOUT HESITATION - a MUSICAL ADVENTURE to melody-filled Scandinavian horizons. You will not be disappointed!!!
